BRODNER – Larson

September 30, 1948 – January 28, 2011

Larson Brodner, beloved husband of Trudy Brodner and father of Alex, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the age of 62 years.

Larson was born (1948) and raised in Montreal spending summers at a dairy farm in Gaspe, QC where he fell through the hay loft one year. As a young man he moved to London, ON and then later Edmonton. He was horrified when he looked at a map and found that Edmonton was the same latitude as James Bay. He then moved to Calgary where he found the love of his life, where he married and had two sons, Matthew (b1985, d2006) and Alex (b1987).

His career spanned from oil and gas companies, to the Alberta Research Council, to engineering firms and for awhile, he did private consulting. These jobs took him around the world where he had many adventures, and sometimes misadventures as he traveled to China, Pakistan, Russia, Ecuador, Peru and Iran to name a few. His favourite time though was with his family camping in Penticton in the Okanogan Valley where Alex would attend hockey school, Matt would go rock climbing, and all would go to Tickleberry’s for ice cream.

Larson loved to ski, ride a motorbike (although both those stopped after the bike accident) golf, and go sailing. His retirement plans were to go to Victoria where he could golf and sail for ten months of the year and the other two would be spent down south somewhere. After recovering from a massive stroke in early 2008, he was afflicted with ALS which rapidly took his life. Larson was always known as having a great sense of humor and friends and business acquaintances used words like kind, gracious and an honest business partner to describe him. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Christopher and Emily and his son Matthew; he will be laid to rest next to Matthew.

A private family service will be held. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the A.L.S. Society of Alberta (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Suite 400, 320 – 23 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2S 0J2, www.alsab.ca , or to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 – 8 Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588.

In living memory of Larson Brodner, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

  3. Martin Siegen :

Trudy we met seldom but I and a gang of guys golfed and played pool with Larson for many years. In 2001 I moved to Mexico and slowly lost touch but one of the old bunch sent me this sad, sad news. Truly sorry to hear this and wanted to let you know our thoughts are with you at this unhappy time. I will always remember Larson’s golf swing, his pool stroke, his sense of humor, how he handled pressure, how much he loved you and his smile.

We were very sad to hear of Larson’s passing. I enjoyed working with Larson, and our family enjoyed our visit with you and the boys a few years ago. Larson was a pleasure to work with at all times, he had a great sense of humour, and was always interested in how other people were doing. He was a terrific person.

  9. Phyllis Thornton :

I am so sad to hear of Larson’s passing. I am also sorry that I didn’t pick up on it sooner. I have fond memories of his sense of humour at (sometimes tedious) MT events. I will be walking in the ALS walk in June, originally in honour of another friend, but will keep Larson in my thoughts as well when I am walking.
