Edward MacPherson Bredin, died on Monday, April 9, 2012 at the Colonel Belcher Care Centre at the age of 98. He is survived by his loving wife Nan (nee MacQueen), his son James (Anne) of Toronto and daughter Maryann of Calgary. He was predeceased by his sister Grace Hjorleifson of Ottawa and his brother Jim of Cornwall, ON. Edward spent his early years in Cereal, AB. He graduated from the University of Alberta in Arts in 1937 and Law in 1938. He was called to the bar in1940 and worked in the City of Calgary’s Legal Department. In 1942, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and did a tour of operations as a navigator on 98 Squadron of the Royal Air Force’s Second Tactical Air Force. On his return to the city in 1945, he re-joined the City’s Law Department and became City Solicitor in 1950. He was made a Q.C. in December 1957. In 1958, he joined Mobil Oil of Canada as General Counsel and Secretary. Upon retirement, he joined the law firm of Howard, Mackie (now Borden, Ladner, Gervais LLP) as counsel.
Edward was a member of the Southern Alberta Branch of the Air Crew Association, Medium Bombers Association, Royal Alberta United Services Institute, Alberta Historical Association, and a lifetime member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. He was a past president of the Association of Canadian General Counsel, Calgary Bar Association, Men’s Canadian Club of Calgary, and the Calgary Branch of the Sir Winston Churchill Society. He was also a long-time director of the Petroleum Law Foundation of Alberta, as well as a co-founder and honorary life director of the Calgary Foundation.
Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.
