Robert Breaker Sr. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at the Strathmore Hospital, at the age of 89 years.
Robert’s family were members of the Sa-yiiks Clan (Daring Leaders), that originated from the North Blackfoot Territory. As a result of his parents’ strong belief and practice in the traditional way of life, Robert lived, understood and respected the teachings and values of the old Blackfoot way of life. He attended Old Sun Residential School near Gleichen in 1930, completed 10 years of education and left at the age of 15 years old. He participated in various sports such as rodeo (bareback, steer wrestling) and hockey. Robert was mechanically inclined and meticulous in all his work projects, especially his farming and ranching operations through the years. Robert loved gardening, driving around and fussing over his pets and spending quality time with his family, especially his many grandchildren.
Robert started farming in 1947 at the age of 22, and continued on until his passing. He was the oldest active farmer in the present times of Siksika, where he continued to help and supervise the Breaker Brothers farm operations. Robert included ranching into his farming operations in the early 1960’s. His legacy and hard work in the farming and ranching way of life continues on with his family (sons, grandchildren of 5 generations).
He served two terms as a Siksika Councillor (1968-1972). He was an avid supporter and Committee member of various social, education, and economic development programs for Siksika from the mid 1960’s to 1980’s, mainly land use committee and agriculture. He was one of the first active minor hockey parents/grandparents.
He married his love of his life, Rosalyn Breaker in 1949. Robert is survived by his wife of 67 years Rosalyn (Big Snake) Breaker and brother/cousin Tim Breaker. He also leaves behind nine children and three adopted children, Darrell (Rosemarie), Donna, Robert Jr. (Audrey), Stewart (Kathy), Ian (Candace), Hester Lynn, Darcie, Merlin (Rayann), Rudy (Darlene); and traditional adopted children, Ralph Makokis, Jenny Goodin, and Sam Jerry. He had 28 grandchildren, of which he raised his oldest granddaughter Kim, grandsons Drew and Lyle; 50 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves the following extended family relatives, namely Black, Brass, Stimson, Raw Eater, Fox, Many Shots, Turning Robe, Backfat, Bear Shirt, McMaster, Yellow Old Woman, Calf Child, Many Heads, Ayoungman, Good Rider, Chief Body, Holy Singers, and Spotted Eagle. The family apologizes for anyone that was missed. He was predeceased by his parents Harry (1979) and Sarah (1984); his sister Irene Stevens (1993); brother Alex (2007); and two grandsons, Mason (1981) and Vincent (2014).
