After a 20+ year struggle with Parkinson’s disease, Hugh lost the race on Sunday, January 27, 2013. He is best remembered for his devotion to family, a mischievous sense of humour with an accompanying twinkle in his bright blue eyes, generous nature and, from his pre-PD days, for his mastery of the lost art of whistling, passion for early jazz and books (including the dictionary he read from cover to cover as a child), ballroom dancing, and his keen and competitive athletic spirit that consistently led him to medal rounds in tennis and badminton and, at mid-life, on the podium for cycling. From seafarer to efficiency expert, his careers took him around the world choosing Calgary as the place to settle down. At Hugh’s request, no services are planned. Instead, he’d be delighted if you raised a glass and quoted a few lines from a favourite jazz artist, Jelly Roll Morton: “Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust. If the women don’t get you, the liquor must.” Special thanks to daughter Lorna, dear friends Marilyn and John, staff at Wentworth The Court DAL and LTC, the medical teams who fought to keep the PD at bay, All About Seniors, and Diversified Leisure Services. He’ll be missed by his children, Owen, Clare, Derek and Lorna, and sisters, Marilyn and Barbara, and their families, wife Cheryl, and friends. Ffarwel, fy nghariad!
