BRAUN, Lena “Helen” (nee Loewen)

September 6, 1917 – January 6, 2013

Helen Braun was born in Sunnyslope, AB on September 6, 1917 and passed away in her sleep at home in Calgary, AB on January 6, 2013.

Helen grew up on the farm in Sunnyslope and in the early years of her marriage, lived in various places across Alberta, Manitoba, where ever her husband John’s work took them. Helen and her family were long-time residents of Bowness, where she quietly nurtured her family and indulged in her passion for the outdoors by growing a large, beautiful garden each summer on their river-front property. For some years Helen assisted her husband at his business, Bowness Photos, then worked at various part-time job at the Foothills Hospital, U of C Infirmary and at The Bay. Upon leaving Bowness and moving to the Ridge in Silver Springs, Helen continued to enjoy the river valley and pursued her love of nature by her almost daily walk along its pathways. After Helen and John moved to Dreamview Village in Hawkwood, Helen was an enthusiastic participant in various social activities, and she enjoyed the friendships of the other residents. They relocated to Edgemont Retirement Residence, where she resided until her passing. While there she appreciated the kind care and assistance she received.

Besides her loving husband of seventy-six years, Helen will be sadly missed by her four children and their spouses, Judy and Dave Dyck, Eleanor and Dennis Doerksen, Florence and Ken Harvey, and John and Sharon Braun; her 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and her large extended family. She was pre deceased by her seven siblings.

A memorial service will be held for Helen at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W.) on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you Uncle John and family. Aunt Helen was a true gem. I so enjoyed our many visits to their place on Bowness. I always wanted a “pink” kitchen just like Aunt Helen’s.

  7. Belle Foley (nee Miller) :

My memories of Mrs. Braun go back to Bowness when Florence, Cathy Lust and I would play school in the garage after school. We were always so warmly greeted by Mrs. Braun. I am also sending condolences on behalf of my Mom, Elisabeth Miller, also 95 years old.

  8. Don and Linda Craig :

Don and I are saddened by your Mom’s passing but we will always remember her kind and gentle spirit from North Calgary Community Church. What a treasure she was and how clearly she passed on that loving nature to our choir. We only knew Judy and Eleanor personally and they certainly carried on your Mom’s beautiful spirit of giving and caring. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Although my Mom, Isobel Boesch is suffering from dementia, I remember her and my Dad speaking so fondly of both Helen and John. She would also offer her condolences.
