September 2, 2013 – Calgary, AB

John Braun passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2013 at the age of 101 years.

John was born in Sunnyslope, AB on January 20, 1912. His family lived in the area until John started school, then moved to Southern Manitoba. He was the oldest child of Peter and Lena Braun and grew up helping his father in the various enterprises that supported the family that grew to include four brothers and four sisters. In 1936, John successfully completed a dairy training course that paved the way to several cream grading and butter making jobs in Manitoba, and later in Alberta, last working for Model Dairies in Calgary. John was married to Helen Loewen in 1937 and after several short-term moves in Manitoba and Alberta, they settled in Bowness in 1943. In the early 1950’s, John left the dairy to open Bowness Photos and expand a long-time hobby into a business. With a keen interest in politics, John served on the Bowness Town Council, and also worked on election campaigns at the local and provincial levels. He used his quiet and straightforward leadership abilities to serve several community and church organizations. Retirement took John and Helen to Dreamview Village in Hawkwood, then to Edgemont Retirement Residence, where he passed away in his sleep on September 2.

Left to cherish John’s Memory are his four children; Judy and son-in-law Dave Dyck of Creston BC, Eleanor and son-in-law Dennis Doerksen, Florence and son-in-law Kennedy Harvey of Calgary and John and daughter-in-law Sharon Braun of Hinton, AB; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great, great grandson. He is also survived by sisters, Minnie Braun, Nellie and brother-in-law Ed Isaac of Reston MB, Lydia Thiessen of Edberg AB, Ruby and brother-in-law Jac Thiessen of Abbotsford BC, as well as a large extended family.

John was predeceased by his beloved wife Helen in January 2013; four brothers Andrew, Walter, Jacob and Glen; as well as an infant sister.

Condolence Messages

  1. Rodney Veinotte :

Sorry to read of the passing of your love one, even though today a 101 is considered a long live. Still it is short when we consider the future that awaits all of us, that Jehovah promises in the future of long life. (Isaiah 65:20-22) (like the days of a tree will the days of my people be). When death will be no more, (Revelation 21:3-4).
