BRAINE, Anne Monica (nee Thornbury)

1935 – Mossend Bellshill Lanarkshire, Scotland
2014 – Airdrie, Alberta

Anne Braine, 78 years young, passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Airdrie, Alberta on February 8, 2014.

Anne was born to Sarah and James Thornbury in Mossend, Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland on September 18, 1935 and was the third eldest of 11 children. She was like a second mother to her younger siblings and grew up to become a state registered nurse in the National Health Service in Scotland. Anne worked primarily with labor and delivery and care of newborns and was in charge of the maternity wing. She came to Canada in 1959 on her first stop of a world tour where she met and fell madly in love with John Braine of Niagara Falls, Ontario. They were married on November 04, 1961. She lived in Niagara Falls with her husband where they had two daughters before moving to Winnipeg in 1967 where a son was born that same year. In 1974 the family moved west with the job market and remained in Calgary and southern Alberta to raise their family.

Anne was an avid gardener with a magical green thumb. She was a member of the garden club, always kept immaculate gardens and ‘inspecting the garden’ was a favorite activity whether at her own home or when visiting others. She was an accomplished seamstress who created beautiful projects of all kinds. She enjoyed many types of stitchery from knitting to crochet and cross-stitch. Anne was an excellent cook who passed her skills on to her children.

Anne is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, John; her daughters, Mary Rydl (husband Mike) and Haley McFarlane (husband Ken); and her son Gary Braine (wife Diana); 8 grandchildren who miss her terribly, Heather, Graeme, Sean, Grace, Daniel, Rebecca, Cassidy and Rylan; siblings, Arthur, Philomena (John), James, May (Jack), Sarah (Bobby), Helen (Karl), Kathleen (John) Alandra (Daye) and Margaret (Chris) all mourn her passing and will miss her dearly. Her sister Theresa (Derek) precedes Anne in death.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul’s Catholic Church (1305 Main St, Airdrie, AB) on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne’s honor may be made to the charity of your choice.

In living memory of Anne Braine, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  11. GERRY THORNBURY :

To John, Mary, Haley, Gary, spouses and far too many to mention,
Deepest sympathies and condolences on the passing of Anne.
I didn’t know your soulmate/mum/goodmother/gran/friend and confidant in a’ time spent’ sense (me – born 58, she flew the nest in 59).
I can only mention early 02 when she came back for Gran Thornbury.
Allison, my wife, and I were lucky enough to have her visit with us and to spend a few hours graced by her company. She was gracious, funny, loving, open, honest, humble and thoroughly entertaining. In fact, she got on with Allison better than I do!
Wish we’d known her better, hope we will in the future.
If it’s not too ‘lassie-ish’ then I’d like to paraphrase someone “…….she’s gone they whispered mournfully, as her ship slipped over the horizon, but, on the other side the joyful cry went up ‘She’s Here!’ ”
    God Bless.

  14. Chris and Margaret Baker :

My Dear John, Mary and Mike, Hayley and Ken, Gary and Diana … please accept our condolences for the loss of Anne – a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, auntie and sister.
We have lovely memories of her visit with us especially when she and Chris went out one dark night scattering poppy seeds in the English hedgerows because they thought there should be more! Ever after she called Chris ‘Poppy’ and that was how she addressed any mail to us. She also instructed me, in December, to go to the garden centre in spring and buy some poppies for Chris to put in the garden.
My memories of Anne span my whole life, she was my ‘big sister’ and I have much to thank her for. When someone is so loved they live still, in the hearts of those who love them.
Be at peace Anne, a thousand blessings on you.
    With our love,
    Poppy and Margaret

  15. Helen Thornbury :

Dear John and Mary, I would like you to know how very much I am going to miss my big sister Anne.
I only reconnected with her when mum died, as we live at opposite sides of the world (I am in Australia).
Although it was a long time we just picked up where we left off. Magic, really!

Thinking of you all, with much love.
