BRAGG – Rachel

January 29, 1915 – January 27, 2011

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Rachel, who died peacefully on January 27. Rachel was the last of the second generation of the Bragg family that originally settled near Bragg Creek in 1892. Rachel was born on a farm near Strathmore, one of nine children of Frank and Mary Harriman, and raised during the Great Depression. She married the love of her life Norman Bragg in 1935. They had five children. Norman taught in various schools east of Calgary until they settled in Standard, AB in 1944. Following Norman’s sudden death in 1960, Rachel and her family moved to Calgary. There she took in boarders for many years, mostly students from SAIT, ACAD and the University of Calgary. Rachel will unquestionably be remembered as a deeply kind and compassionate woman with a gentle laugh and a thirst for knowledge. Her love of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were equalled only by the love of her husband, from whom she was parted too soon, and anticipated meeting again.

Rachel is survived by children John (Barbara) Bragg, Norma Christensen, Allan (Susan) Bragg, Robert (Joanne) Bragg, Mary Lee (Colin) Bragg; brother Norman Harriman; ten grandchildren five great-grandchildren and one special great-great-grandchild Rachel Lily Suppin. She was predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Crowfoot Chapel (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W.), on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at Mountain View Memorial Gardens and Cemetery (17th Avenue South East at Garden Road, 1515 100 Street S.E.) on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. You may forward condolences through In lieu of flowers if friends so desire donations may be made to the Norman Bragg Memorial Library, c/o Standard School, Standard, AB, T0J 3G0. Special thanks to the staff at Scenic Acres Retirement Residence for their considerate and professional care and support during the past five years.

  2. I have heard many stories of Rachel Bragg from Mary Lee: baby whisperer, expert seamstress, coper of great capacity, improviser, proud mother….I am sure there is much, much more to this great lady. I was in awe of her continued engagement with life right up to the end. Life was not wasted on her.

  7. Penny Hildahl/Gordon England :

Hello John, Norma, Allan, Robert, Mary Lee and families. Your mother was one of my favorite people in this world. She was indeed a gracious lady with a wicked sense of humour. I have always admired the way she lived her life so positively and productively though she must have been devastated by your father’s early death. Your mom did so many wonderful things for people (including many nieces, nephews and their spouses, partners & offspring), reaching out to provide a shoulder to cry on, a place to stay, some words of encouragement or praise, or whatever was needed to “buck you up” or “straighten you up”. For a period of several years after I (Penny) left home she was like a second mother to me. Please know that she will live on in the fabric of our lives and the family stories we tell. She will be missed by us all, and I am sure her death has left a large void in your lives. Please take care, and know that we are thinking of you. Love, Penny & Gordon

  8. Gordon and Bev Jaremko and family :

We are sorry to hear of your loss. We did not know your mother but have come to know and admire Robert and Joanne and seeing the family history rounds out some of the source of exemplary character.
I had not realized that your family were pioneers though, or that there were roots in Standard, or that Norman taught school. My parents, Wilf and Doris Smith, moved to Rosebud in about 1947 and had two children there, leaving in about 1950. It is likely our families crossed paths way back when. My mother taught school for a time in Rosebud.
There is a great strength in big families and a huge lesson to be learned from brave pioneers, strong strong women and loving nurturers.

    Our sympathies
