BOYLE, James Howard

March 2, 1922 – July 16, 2014

“He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it”

Our much loved Dad, grampa, great grampa, uncle, cousin and friend passed away July 16th after a brief illness. Jim was born and raised in Alberta, and attended St. Joseph High School in Edmonton. When war broke out Jim was trained as a navigator, and served in the RAF. When he returned to Edmonton, he married his high school sweetheart, Rachael Costello, and together they raised six children. Jim found a job as a bank teller in Camrose, and thus began an illustrious career with the Royal Bank of Canada that spanned over 30 years. Rachael and Jim moved from a one room boarding house in Camrose to the busy metropolis of Calgary in 1952. Here, together with their kids, they enjoyed many epic adventures. Sadly, Rachael passed away in 1973, just before his retirement from RBC.

As a young retiree he began a second career with Barnwell Canada and he soon met and married Muriel Donnithorne. Jim welcomed her children under his wing. Muriel and Jim enjoyed dining, dancing, travelling the world and many family dinners. They were loving grandparents and great grandparents to their growing family. Jim was a dedicated volunteer at several organizations in Calgary. They had lifelong friends around the world. Muriel passed away in 2011. Jim has resided at the Colonel Belcher Residence where he enjoyed visits from family and friends.

Jim was a renaissance man. He loved his family, his country and the great outdoors. He was highly respected in the business community. He had a deep and unending faith. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives, and his blessings will continue to support us.

Mourning his loss are his children, (Kathleen and Larry Leonard, Anne and Paul Armstrong, Tim Boyle, Howard and Bev Boyle, Mary and Hugh Phelan, Janey and Brian Sondergaard), his step children, (Marcia and Al DeSantis, Jan Donnithorne, Richard and Sonja Donnithorne), his grandchildren, (Patrick, Carmen, Kelly, Colin, Sarah, Steve, Mike, Jeanette, James, Erin, Rich, Chris, Alissa, Meghan, Amanda, Alan, Katie, Doug, Warren, Suzie, Eric, Mandi, Rachel, Nancy, Wendy, Bryan, and Elizabeth) his great grandchildren, (Mikayla, Katrina, Isabella, Kaiya, Jacob, Norah, Noah, Charlie, Sophie, Julia, and William) and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at Holy Name Church (2223 – 34 St. SW) on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Church on Wednesday July 23, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.

In living memory of James Boyle, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. Helene and Ted Groleau :

Ted and I wish to extend to the entire family our most sincere condolences. When we were down for Lucille’s funeral last November, we had a lovely visit with Jim following the service. I was surprised he remembered who I was but it was Jim that approached us, and it was so nice being able to visit albeit briefly. What a kind and generous man. He is now resting with all those who predeceased him and to the family we send our love and pray that God will give you all strength. Ted and Helene

  3. Jim Strother and family :

My condolences to the Boyle family at the loss of a wonderful man. Uncle Jim was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and a loving family man. He lived a long, productive and successful life in every sphere, but it is still hard to know he is gone – and the last of his generation of a special family.

My deepest sympathy to all of my cousins and their families in this sad time.

  6. Al & Monica Grainger :

Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time. I have such happy memories of times studying music theory with you Kathleen, and then with both Howard and Tim as our paper boys back on Kerrydale Rd. way back when, and then of course so many happy memories of Father Tim’s time at All Saints Parish here in Lethbridge.

  7. Al & Monica Grainger :

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. Your father was a wonderful man and example to us all at Holy Name back in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. I have good memories of music adventures with Kathleen, I think it was theory we studied then, and of Howard and Tim as our paper boys, and then of course with Father Tim here in Lethbridge. God bless you all!

  9. Thérèse Boyle :

Our uncle Jim was a hero to us, someone we looked to as an example of how to live your faith. Tall though slight and self-effacing, he was in spirit a towering figure, whose eyes were generally sparkling with humour and wit. Uncle Jim’s career was the reflection of a brilliant and incisive intellect, yet his every action seemed to be ruled by his heart, and his every thought filled with insight and compassion for others. He was our wonderful Dad’s big brother, and a confidante and champion of us all. We will remember him, and all he tried to teach us, all our lives. There will never be another like him, or another generation like his.

Deepest sympathy to all the family, I was honoured to have been able to correspond with Jim on the subject of that brief but defining part of his long life that was spent in England. Men like Jim Boyle will never be forgotten over here for what they did. Rest peacefully sir.
