June 30, 1948 – Regina, Saskatchewan
June 12, 2014 – Calgary, AB
Frederica Bowden (nee Shnay) born June 30, 1948, died peacefully June 12, 2014.
Frederica generally chose a road less travelled whether it was how she dealt with her cancer or her choice of professions. Although she remained a geologist in her soul, she was a passionate educator particularly of the exceptional and unique individuals who presented themselves to her. She taught a wide range of subjects at all levels taking degrees in Geography/Geology, Education, Special Education and Educational Administration, writing numerous books and articles, and presenting professional papers in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Saudi Arabia. Her hobbies were travel, photography and architecture and she enjoyed these until the end of her life.
She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her son, Adam Bowden, sisters Deborah Shnay (Tom Kerwin), Rebecca Cowan (Jerry) and Mara Shnay and friends as well as many, many students from coast to coast.
A Celebration of Frederica’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Cambrian Heights School, 640 Northmount Drive NW, Calgary, T2K 3J5. These funds will be used to create a collection of books and resource materials to honour Frederica’s dedication to science education, and the encouragement of all exceptional needs children.Print This Obituary & Condolences
