BLANCHARD, Murray Eugene

August 4, 1926 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
July 8, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Murray Blanchard, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the age of 90 years, surrounded by Lise and Ian up until his final moments.

Murray earned a Masters degree from M.I.T. in Civil Engineering and travelled and lived all over the world from Nigeria to Jamaica, Australia, Cayman Islands, Vancouver, Ajijic-Mexico and the Middle East, just to name a few. With his Masters, Murray was asked by many companies to speak on their behalf. He was even on a television show here in Calgary many years ago. Murray was the Chief Engineer on a dam in Saudi Arabia as well as the Hyatt Britannia Golf Course in Grand Cayman, where he was able to golf with Jack Nicklaus. Many in his field knew who he was just by his name. Murray was in Project Management for many years and companies sought his expertise out.

Dad had a great sense of humor and was quick-witted. He loved to share his many adventures with people and many enjoyed his company immensely. He was a member of The Lake Chapala Society and many there will be sad to hear of his passing.

He spent his last months with his daughter, Lise, and his grandsons, Josh and Jared, in Mexico and Calgary. His son, Ian, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, visited Murray often in Mexico so there are good memories for them there.

Murray spent his last fifteen years between Vancouver and Mexico but sadly many of his good friends had passed on before him so his circle of loved ones became smaller and smaller, a loss he felt greatly.

Murray was healthy and loved to walk up to the last year of his life and one of his passions was sailing. Dad even bought the hull of a 32 foot sail boat which he lovingly restored, having his children help with the sanding and fiber glassing. Sadly dad had to sell it to an English couple who sailed it for many years when dad moved to Montreal making it impossible to keep his pride and joy.

Dad built radios and loved making things such as installing his own huge satellite dish in Grand Cayman. Dad loved dogs and cats and even bred Boxers in Jamaica for a time. He worked for Montreal Engineering, Alcan, Denoes and Geddes, Rio Tinto and even had his own company in Jamaica for a short time.

Golf, pool, tennis, swimming and sailing were passions of his. Murray loved crosswords, Sudoku, the internet and kept up on world news and politics daily on Fox News and CNN. He was a very smart man and his memory was amazing. Murray was an excellent tennis and pool player, and an avid golfer; he even won some trophies. He was a food and wine lover and was well-educated on the subject. Murray was very habitual and we used to joke about setting our clocks to his daily activities. He will be missed dearly and our lives are forever changed now that he’s gone.

Murray is survived by his daughter Sharon Blanchard of Gatineau, QC, his son and daughter-in-law Ian and Kathy Blanchard of Colorado Springs, CO, his daughter Lise Danielle Blanchard of Calgary; his grandchildren, Joshua Klassen and Jared Klassen of Calgary, Johnathan Blanchard of Gilbert, AZ, Kristopher Blanchard of Colorado Springs, CO and Katelyn “Kat” Blanchard of Denver, CO; his great-granddaughter Sienna Hunchuk-Klassen; his sister Lorraine Manzo of Richmond, VA; and his brother-in-law Ron Harrop of Halifax, NS.

Murray is also remembered by numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews that live in many different cities in Canada and the U.S.A. Murray had many great friends all over the world such as Allan and Mauretta Farmer, Gordon and Audrey Machnee, Earl and Claudette Mogilevsky, as well as the many members from the Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic, Mexico. Sadly for Murray many of his dear friends have passed away over the years but there are just too many to mention.

Murray was predeceased by his parents Alphonse Jean Blanchard and Mary Elizabeth Blanchard of Nova Scotia; his sister Deanne Harrop of Nova Scotia; and too many friends to list.

We plan on having his ashes spread with a small ceremony in Mexico and we will let everyone know when and where so they may join us in celebration of his long and well lived life. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Murray’s honour may be made directly to any animal shelter.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary who made Murray’s last moments here comfortable and peaceful. They treated him with kindness and dignity right up to and even after his passing. The staff and members from The Lake Chapala Society in Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico meant a great deal to him and he loved going there often. Thank you to the many family and friends; Murray loved meeting people from all walks of life.

In living memory of Murray Blanchard, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Eastside, 5388 MEMORIAL DRIVE N.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403- 248-8585.

  2. My husband Gord and I are very sorry to hear of Murray’s passing. He was our landlord and friend several years back in West Vancouver. We see no mention of Dom and find this disconcerting as they were very much in love.
