BLAKELY, Patricia

April 7, 1935 – Calgary, AB
January 4, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Patricia Anne Blakely (Quigley), 78, passed away suddenly on Saturday, January 4, 2014.

Patricia was born on April 7, 1935 in Calgary, Alberta to Robert and Emily Quigley.

Patricia spent her younger years during the war on the west coast with her mother and grandmother while her father, Lt. Col. Robert Quigley, served overseas from 1940 to 1945 with the Royal Canadian Artillery. After the war Patricia moved back to Calgary where she continued her studies and attended Central High School. Patricia was an intelligent, beautiful, and quietly independent woman who wanted to further her education. She worked and paid her own way through post-secondary school attending the University of Alberta graduating with a B.Sc. in 1957. While attending the U of A, Patricia met and married Samuel Elgin Blakely. They were together 35 years and had six children, 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Patricia was not only a mother of six children, all of whom adored her, but she was also a career woman. She worked as a laboratory technologist for many years with the Alberta Red Cross, Calgary Baker Centre, Calgary Medical Labs, and the General Hospital. After a few years of retirement Patricia returned to work as a lab-tech but this time in the oil and gas industry at C & M Engineering.

She always loved science, as it came naturally to her, in addition to having an artistic side. After retirement she developed her amazing creativity by becoming an accomplished artist using many different mediums from canvas to oil paints to pastels to charcoal. She also started painting pots, wood products, and other art projects with her daughter Kelley, forming the company PaKel Creations. They had displays at the Millarville Market for many years with the assistance of her grandchildren Danielle and Trevor.

On her own for more than 20 years, Patricia enthusiastically spent as much time as possible with her family and travelled a great deal. During her life she had the opportunity to travel to many places which she loved such as Scotland, England, France, Italy, Japan, China, Malaysia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Maritimes, and several States too numerous to mention. She was busy with many friends at Glenmore Pool, Lakeview United Church, various volunteer jobs, and spending time lunching and dining with friends and family.

The passing of our mother, grandmother, friend has left a giant void in our hearts, but has left amazing memories of a beautiful human being. Leaving to mourn the loss of such a generous, kind, and compassionate spirit are her children Kelley (Jeff), Jim, John, Karen (Dave), Colleen (Ross); grandchildren Christopher, Kristen, Bryce, Sean, Trevor, Danielle, Jordin, Ashley, Kyle, Clara, Joel, Evan, Blake and great grandchildren, Hevyn, Avery, Katie, Jacob, Brooke. She is also survived by her sister Roberta (Ken) and brother Rick (Eve) and many nephews and nieces. Patricia was predeceased by her son Douglas in 1996.

Patricia was a bright light for all who knew her. Her children adored her for who she was – her complete essence was of beauty and kindness. She always thought of others and her main concern was for the wellbeing of her family. Though her passing will leave emptiness in our hearts and our lives we take comfort in knowing that Patricia is with God; she is not alone. All who loved her now have a guardian angel in heaven.

A Celebration of Life will held at Lakeview United Church (3023 63 Avenue S.W.) on Monday, January 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will be held following the service. If family and friends desire, in lieu of flowers we ask donations be sent to Lakeview United Church or a charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Patricia Blakely a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  6. Aura Leigh Anscombe :

Dear Colleen, Ross, Blake and the rest of Pat’s family,

I was so sorry to hear of Pat’s passing, and for the pain I know you are all feeling. I only met Pat a few times, but always thought she was so friendly and full of spunk. I always saw that spunk in the family of hers that I met.

Colleen, the loss of a mom is terribly painful and I’m sorry for your pain. I know you and your mom had a special relationship and I’m confident there will be a time when the memories are warm and comforting. Between then and now, take care . I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers but if you need anything – even just someone to make you tea and to babble at while you work through things in your head and heart – don’t hesitate to reach out (at any time).

    Take care,
    Aura Leigh

  7. Wanda Chorney :

I was tremendously saddened by the news of Patricia’s passing. I only have fond and treasured memories of this lovely lady who my children were honoured to have as their Grandmother. Despite the physical distance between them they had the opportunity on a few occasions to develop their relationship. Joel and Evan (sons of John) will never forget the memories they made together with ‘Gram Pat’ this past summer in Montana. Patricia had a big heart and she embraced life so eloquently. She lived for her children and grandchildren. We will truly miss her spirit but know that she is in a serene place. To all of the Blakely family I send my condolences. Please know that I care. Wanda, Joel and Evan.

  8. Bent Herlufsen :

    Hi John Joel and Evan:
I am sad for you, for the loss of a mother and grandmother, an eventuallity that befalls all of us as we age.
My mother died in February, after 94 years of a good and hard working life. Like your mother, she also lived for her children. I never knew your mother, but, in knowing you, I can see she would be a kind and generous soul, caring and giving. There is always the immediate impact of loss and sorrow, and, I hope that you will be encouraged by all the good things to rememember about her, these are the things that build you up and encourage you, which is surely what she would want to see from all of you. I know you will take the encouragement and love from your family and good friends at this time. Although these are sad occasions, the pleasantness of people meeting, crying, hugging and commenting on the good life of a lovely person now gone, this is an encouragement and manifests her human value, and the grievous loss, before all of you.
To know at this occasion, that many others also cared about her, because of her and all of you, is precious. You will have benefits of this occasion and its effects for many years to come.
Take courage, and may you be sutained by the love and care of all around.
Please accept my love and sympathy at this time.
    Your friend
    Bent

  9. Dawn (Buffam) Kaysoe :

I have fond memories of her or “Mrs. Blakely” – as I remember her growing up. Mom to a special friend Karen and mother of 6! I remember thinking how on earth did she do it! Not that they were an unruly bunch – but there were just so many “Blakelys” in that Law Drive house! Out of all of my friends, Karen had the most siblings, but she also had one of the most awesome moms! She even allowed Karen to have a pile of her Grade 9 girlfriends sleep over after our grade 9 grad. (as if she didn’t have enough kids to deal with she was making breakfast for 10 or so 14 year old girls:) what a patient woman! Mrs. Blakely was a lovely lady and someone who will be remembered fondly by those who knew her. My sincere condolences to the family and especially you Karen. May each of your tears represent a loving memory.

I have so many warm and cherished memories of Aunt Pat. Especially from my childhood when I would sit and listen to her, my mom, my uncle and Grandma visit and laugh together. She and Grandma have left an
empty place in my life that I will always mourn. But they stay locked away deep in my heart and I will never forget ♥♥
