Blake, Matilda (Tillie)
Tillie Blake, formerly of Saskatoon, passed away peacefully in Calgary, on Friday, August 29, 2008 at the age of 95 years, with her family by her side.
Tillie was born April 17, 1913 in Lossiemouth, Morayshire, Scotland and immigrated to Saskatoon in 1924. She received her education in Saskatoon, where she attended Princess Alexandra Elementary School and was one of the first students to attend Bedford Road Collegiate. After graduation, Tillie worked at Cockshutt Plow Co. Ltd. until she married the love of her life, Charlie Blake, on October 2, 1933. Tillie and Charlie made their home in Saskatoon where they raised and educated two daughters Palma and Barbara. Tillie broke tradition of the time, and worked at several jobs outside the home, her favourite being Secretary to the Manager at Canada Permanent Trust Company. While Charlie was a member of the Saskatoon Downtown Lions Club, Tillie was a charter member of Lion’Ls, twice being elected president. She had many interests which included curling, square dancing, live theatre, interior design and crafts (she was a charter member of the Saskatoon Craft Guild). Tillie’s true passion was duplicate bridge. She was a long time member of the Saskatoon Duplicate Bridge Club and attained her Golden Age Master certificate. Also, Tillie and Charlie enjoyed travelling, and over the years, took many driving vacations throughout Canada and the United States. In June 2000, Tillie and Charlie moved to Calgary to be closer to family. In Calgary, they formed many new friendships at Scenic Acres Retirement Home, where Tillie continued to play bridge.
Tillie was the loving mother of two daughters; Palma McCullagh of Burlington, ON, and Barbara (Jim) Gettis of Calgary, AB. She is survived by five grandchildren; Scott McCullagh (Linda), Leslie McCullagh (Chris), Kelly McCullagh, Paul Gettis, and Michael Gettis; and one great-grandson Liam McCullagh. Tillie is also survived by her sister Marty Nicholson and sister-in-law Bertha Marshall.
Tillie was predeceased by her husband Charlie on June 18, 2002, her grandson Brent Gettis on November 2, 2007, her parents Martha and Adam Marshall, brother Jim Marshall and sister Margaret (Meg) Caisley.
