Esther Birkenes, beloved wife of the late Leonard Birkenes of Calgary passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013.
Esther was born to Norwegian parents in the farming community of Medicine Hat. At fourteen she left home to work on a dairy farm and earned her board in order to attend high school in Medicine Hat. By grade eleven she was a checker at the steam laundry and later joined the staff at T. Eaton Co. In 1949 Esther married Leonard Birkenes and settled in Calgary, where they faithfully cared for family, friends and neighbours. The beauty of nature made Esther’s heart sing and she loved to walk the trails with Len, taking special interest in bird behavior and wildflowers. Esther was an efficient, practical and creative homemaker, and produced many beautiful handcrafted items. She will be dearly missed.
Esther is survived by her daughter Carol, sister Alma, numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband Leonard, daughter Lynn, parents Karen and Hans, sisters Mary (Bill), Lorine (Johnny), and Helen (Jim).
At Esther’s request, no formal service will be held. Together, Esther and Len’s cremated remains will be placed in their daughter Lynn’s plot at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
