BIGLAND, Michael John William

June 29, 1964 – Calgary, Alberta
April 21, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

It comes with great sadness to announce the passing of Mike Bigland. He was an amazing husband to Sherry and a wonderful father to Keely, Alexandra and Noah, of Cochrane, AB. He passed away on April 21, 2014 at the age of 49 years.

Mike was born in Calgary, raised in Medicine Hat where he completed his high school and college. He went on to work for Methanex until they relocated to Cochrane. Family was very important to Mike. He loved his children and was so very proud of them. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. Mike was a humble man who put everyone’s needs before his own and was always there to lend a hand. Mike spent the past 12 years in Cochrane actively involved in minor hockey. Mike generously volunteered his time in minor hockey and took his love of the sport to make a huge impact in many people’s lives. This April Mike was honoured for his commitment to volunteering and he was so proud of this accomplishment. Mike looked forward to his annual golf trips with his friends. He loved boating and one of his favorite family vacation spots to go was Whitefish. Mike enjoyed his morning coffee with his A&W customers and hearing their stories. He will be forever missed for his amazing sense of humor and infectious smile. Mike was a recipient of Stem Cells and Blood, so his family requests that you consider donating to these two causes in Mike’s memory so one day you can save a life.

Besides his loving wife Sherry, Mike is survived by his children, Keely, Alexandra and Noah; and his mother, Barbara Bigland; sister Jaci Bigland; and his brother Rod (Vicki) Bigland; their children Christopher and Jessica and families; parents in law Fred and Lynne Vellenoweth; sister in law Nicole and Jim Audette, nephews Chandler and Nikolas Audette; brother in law Tim Vellenoweth, nephew/niece Brayden and Brianne Vellenoweth. He was predeceased by his father Bill Bigland and grandparents.

A Celebration of Mike’s Life will be held at Cochrane Alliance Church (902 Glenbow Drive, Cochrane, AB) on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/memorial or directly to KidSport Canada – Alberta, Box 36107, Lakeview RPO, Calgary, AB T3E 7C6 Telephone: 1-(888) 91-4kids or (403) 217-3761, www.kidsportcanada.ca. Condolence Messages

  1. Doug, John, & Carol MacLaren :

Sherry, Barbara, Fred, Lynne and family,
We are deeply sorry to hear of Mikes passing. Our heartfelt condolences. We’ll always remember Mike as an easy going teenager when he played on rep hockey teams in the ‘Hat with Doug. He never picked a fight but if any player on the opposition “wanted to go”, they learned very quickly that they had picked on the wrong guy—he could really handle his dukes! And he was always there to stick up for his team mates. He was a great guy! We know he will be sorely missed but he now is in a better place.
    Doug, John & Carol MacLaren.

    Dear Sherry and family:
Bill and I are very disappointed that we are unable to join you at the service to mark Mike’s passing but travel to Cochrane is challenging for us today. It is very difficult to find words to express our sorrow at his loss. This must be so difficult for you – he was such a big light in this world and we lost that light far too soon. We will remember with fondness his big smile and many kindnesses to Bill and I. We are holding you in our hearts and minds with love.
Sending you many hugs and hoping you can find some comfort in recalling the wonderful times you had with him.
