BICEK, Joseph

May 5, 1934 – May 20, 2012

Joseph Bicek, beloved husband of Helen Bicek (predeceased), passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the age of 78 years surrounded by his family.

Joseph was born in Klec, Czech Republic and defected to Canada via Austria in 1952. He met and fell in love with Helen in Montreal and they married in 1968. They started their family while in Quebec and relocated to Calgary in 1981. Joseph worked for many years at Astral Photo and retired as the Vice President for the Western Canadian operations in 1995. He was an avid outdoorsman in his younger years and passed on his love for the outdoors to his children. Joseph was the consummate family man and lived for the ones he held dear. Family was his life, and he was ours. He is deeply missed.

He is survived by his daughter Lisa and her partner Michel, his son Scott and his wife Catherine along with their three children Benjamin, Jacqueline, and Samuel. Joseph is also survived by his brother in-law Jiri Vlach and his extended family in the Czech Republic, and Helen’s siblings James, Lionel (Evelyn), Malcolm and Yvonne (Marc), along with numerous nieces and nephews and their partners and children.

Joseph was predeceased by his wife Helen earlier this spring. He was also predeceased by his mother Anna Bicekova, his father Joseph Bicek and his sister Zdenka Vlachova.

Joseph’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to those who demonstrated such warmth and compassion in the preceding months: Dr. Zahid Rafiq who acted above and beyond as Joseph’s family physician, Amanda and colleagues from Palliative Homecare (NE), and Drs. Sharma and Shergill and the staff at the Santuari Hospice at the PLC. Thank you all. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Joseph Bicek, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Eastside Memorial Chapel, 5388 MEMORIAL DRIVE N.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403-248-8585

Condolence Messages

  1. Phoebe Edmond :

Please accept my sincere condolences. Death is our great enemy. However we can find hope and comfort in the words found in Revelation 21:4 when “death will be no more, nor mourning, nor pain be anymore…”

  2. Maria Donaldson :

    Dear Bicek Family:

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your father.

I went to St. Francis with Lisa and fondly recall your dad driving us home with our “baby chicks” that we had to raise in our Personal Living Skills class!

I was also very sad to read about the recent loss of your mother as well.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. Lorraine Heckenlaible (Maiden Name Tremblay) :

    To The Bicek Family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time as you mourn the lost of a Father and Grandfather.

Your dad was my first boss out of high school. My Aunt Madeline worked at Angreen Photo in Montreal. I came to Montreal for 1 year and my aunt was able to get me a job at Angreen Photo. The last time I saw your father was at my Aunt Madeline funeral in May 2000. It was a pleasure working for your father and I was just thinking about him the other day. I was looking in the paper yesterday and I noticed the announcement. I am so very sorry for your loss.
