BEWELL, Charles Edgerton

January 3, 1919 – Tessier, Saskatchewan
February 11, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Charles Bewell passed away peacefully at the Carewest Colonel Belcher on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at the age of 96 years.

Born on a farm in Tessier, Saskatchewan, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a radar technician during World War II. In 1949, he received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta. In 1966, he joined SAIT as a Mathematics Instructor, and was instrumental in developing computer training there. At SAIT, Charles found a community of friends, his “SAIT buddies,” who became an essential part of his extended family. Asked about his career there, he said, “I had a pretty full career. I wouldn’t change anything.” Charles was married to Mary Elizabeth, who remained his love, mainstay, and best-self until her death in 2003.

Charles played baseball until he was 55; he golfed until he was 93; and he loved curling. He spent his last years poring over racing charts and using his computer trying to pick winners. In life’s race, he did not need a computer; he had his family, his friends, and all the joys and blessings that life brought him.

Charles is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Gary Bewell and Alan and Sharon Bewell; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sharon Bewell and Fred Lau, Deborah Bewell, Kathy Bewell and Rob Tucker; five grandchildren, Colin and Isabel Lau, Carmen and Jonathan Weiss, Laura Gothreau, Janet Bewell, and Alison Lau; and three great-grandchildren, Justin, Eliza, and Avalon. He is also survived by his sister, Christina Taylor.

Charles predeceased by a brother, Clarence Bewell; and four sisters, Bertha Watson, Olive Nichols, Marguarite Meehan, and Evelyn Lehner.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. 3. It is always bad when someone goes but especially sad when it is someone who proves that one isn’t “too old to do anything”. Horse racing keeps a lot of older people going and the racing community lost a good one who worked hard to decipher racings puzzles.
