BEST, Larry John

March 30, 1956 – Calgary, Alberta
December 17, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

Our dear, sweet, wonderful Larry, beloved husband of Maureen Flynn Best, suddenly passed away on December 17, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones.

Larry led a complete and fruitful life; loving husband, twin brother to Linda, cousin and “Best” friend. He loved to golf, travel, and spend time with his family and friends at the cabin in Windermere and long, long walks with his puppy Quinn by his side.

Living with unwavering integrity and humility he strived to make a difference through his work and volunteering. With their golden retriever, Quinn, Larry and Moe brought joy and laughter to the Pals Program which uplifted everyone at the Children’s Hospital. He firmly believed in the “Pawsitive” power of pet therapy. Experiencing joy in living and laughter was important to Larry. The pride of obtaining a hole in one at his home course, the Elk’s, was a moment to remember. Larry lived with passion; he loved great adventures with motorcycles, Segway’s, zip-lining and sailing. His gentleness, wisdom and caring nature was felt by all those who knew him.

Predeceased by his mother and father Ethel and Jack Best and sister Janice Horrell, and numerous cherished aunts, uncles and cousins and eastern in-law’s and relatives.

Special thanks to the Emergency Staff at the Foothills Hospital and especially Nurse Catherine and Dr. Teresa Kieser.

A Celebration of Larry’s Life will take place at the Elk’s Golf Club (2502 6 St. N.E Calgary) on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2:00 p.m. Please bring your special stories of Larry to share. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If you would like to continue Larry’s legacy, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to PALS (Pet Access League Society) at 3019-21 Street NE Calgary, AB T2E 7T1 Ph. 403-250-PALS (7257) Charitable Registration #10781-1879-RR0001 Email: info@palspets.com.

In living memory of Larry Best, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Bill and I remember our talks with Larry on the Windstar cruise last year. He loved talking about dogs, golfing with Bill and his Windermere cabin. He made us very welcome on that cruise and we will remember him as a teddy bear with a wonderful zest for living life to its fullest.
Our thoughts are with Moe and this family.

  2. I had the good fortune of working with Larry twice in my career, once at Shell Canada and now at North West Redwater. The way he treated everyone he dealt with is testimony to how highly we all felt about him. He was always upbeat, passionate about everything he was doing, and you could never end a conversation without him sincerely asking how you were doing. Although we will all miss him, I believe we are all better for having had him in our lives.
My thoughts are with Maureen and his extended family.

and showing it to us at completion.
AND all your gadgets to better your golf game. LOL

why this should happen to such a person. Please know that our thoughts are with you Maureen, at this very difficult time.

  14. Larry the Best. If I had met Larry in my 20’s rather than my 60’s there’s a chance I’d have been a singer rather than a salesman. Lucky for me I sailed with Larry and his friends off of Vancouver on two occasions with lasting memories I will treasure forever. He has charted his next voyage and if my luck holds I hope we meet again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Moe.

    Maureen,
We are so sorry to hear about Larry. We always enjoyed meeting up with Larry – he was always so warm and friendly. Our last unexpected visit with Larry was at Foothills Hospital – he had brought his friend in who was hurt in a golf cart rollover. He told us stories of growing up in Parkdale on the same street that our daughter lives right now.
Our thoughts are with you – he will be missed by many.

  18. David Pettigrew :

Hi Moe. Larry was just the nicest man with the most gentle and kind disposition and he always had a smile on his face and time in his day for everybody and for everything. Through all the many many hours he and I spent working together on Indian Beach “stuff” we became great friends and I’ll never forget those times together because I sincerely felt that my life was much better off just for having known and for having had the opportunity to work with Larry. Larry was a person that really mattered and he always made you feel that you mattered too. I’m going to miss him in so many ways and at so many times as will Judy and the other members of my family all of whom came to know Larry as that nice man, friend and neighbour just two doors down. And then there’s Quinn. Please give Quinn a hug from us because I know he’s going to really miss Larry as well.

Judy and I will not be able to attend the celebration in Calgary on Sunday however please know that our hearts go out to you that we will be thinking of you at that time.

It is with sadness that we just learned of the passing of Larry, Moe our thoughts are with you. As I read through the comments above, it is hard to add much more. There will be a real void as we walk down the trails of IBE and not see that big smile and caring face, along with a true genuine interest in our families including our four legged friends. I can now picture Larry greeting all the great family pets in heaven that once ran the beach that are no longer with us. We will miss you!!!

  28. Sometimes life is not fair – the world still needed more Larry Best. I will miss Larry in so many ways. He was so supportive of me when I started playing golf later than many. I always played my best golf with Larry – he had the knack of keeping things light & easy – before you knew it he had you in the zone. Rest easy my friend and thanks for the wonderful memories.
