BERGSTROM, Jennifer Lynn

June 26, 1953 – Prince Albert, SK
October 9, 2013 – Calgary, AB

Jennifer Bergstrom passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at the age of 60 years.

Jennifer was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Gerald and Jean Bergstrom, the only daughter and eldest of seven children.

Jennifer left for Saskatoon and obtained a BA in Education from the University of Saskatchewan. After a few years in the hospitality industry in Saskatoon, Jennifer decided to move to Calgary. She listened to “I’m Alberta Bound” on the radio as she crossed the Saskatchewan/Alberta border and always thought that was a good omen.

Jennifer continued in the hospitality business in Calgary. Later she was recruited to enter the mortgage industry at Westcor Mortgage. After a few years, Jennifer founded her own business, Jencor Mortgage Corporation. Her logical and ever brilliant mind, her love of a discussion, some might say her love of an argument, her desire for helping people, her competitive nature, her concern to ensure her clients were treated fairly and well, led to a very successful personal career and a legacy company.

Jennifer was an early entrant in the mortgage brokerage industry. Her success was an example for many, especially young women. Calgary has one of the strongest, most vibrant group of mortgage brokers in Canada and Jennifer’s pioneering efforts played a big part of that development. Jennifer liked to hire friends so her work place was personal, friendly, passionate and highly entertaining, much like Jennifer herself.

After retiring from her business in 1995, Jennifer travelled extensively, visiting Europe, Russia, South & North America and Asia. She saw much of the Mediterranean from a boat harboured in Cyprus. She especially enjoyed the Greek Islands often with visiting friends from Canada. She also began to winter in Costa Rica. Her exuberant social nature led to a new group of ex-pat friends and many new stories.

Loving to tell a story and entertain, she became a gourmet cook where her entertaining took on a new dimension. Jennifer had many other interest and passions. Gardening became another pastime she easily mastered. Her yard was a colorful treat every summer, rivalling Butchart Gardens in visual intensity. She would often rattle off the Latin names of her favorite flowers. Cycling, scrabble; she mastered everything she became interested in.

Although Jennifer was very successful, she was not materialistic, but she was a collector, a collector of friends. She had lifelong friends, restaurant friends, business friends, mortgage friends, real estate friends, Greek Island friends, Costa Rica friends and she had family friends. She truly loved hearing friends laugh at her stories and antics.

Jennifer is predeceased by her father Gerald, who she greatly admired and loved and her brother Brent. She is survived by her mother, Jean of Saskatoon SK and five brothers, Jack (Marilyn) of Sylvan Lake AB, Greg (Loretta) of Fort St. John BC, Wade (Brenda) of Prince Albert SK, Cain of Saskatoon SK and Christopher of Saskatoon SK, step daughter Channel Hykaway (Cynthia) and step grandson Atticus, along with many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

  6. I met Jennifer in a car accident—coming home from a dance neither one of us was supposed to be at—- sharing a hospital room that filled to the rafters every day at 3:30 when school was out. She got me hired at A & W –I think this is where her organizational skills got started–running the front end like nobody’s business.
When she started Jencor she was successful right off the bat & recruited many of her friends to come & work there–she needed bodies & I saw the opportunity of making more money than I’d ever seen in my life !! It must have seemed like trying to herd a room of elephants–we worked hard but she worked harder.
I’ve never been around anyone as funny as Jennifer–she could take an everyday nothing event & give it 15 minutes of fame –how she could come up with her material –I’ll never cease to be amazed–she was brilliant & so much fun to be around.
She excelled at everything she put her hand to—I just can’t believe you’re gone Jen—you were a one & only
    xoxoxoxoxo — Love Marvis

  7. Jim Haleschuk :

It is with great disbelief that I learn another one of the Bergstrom family has passed on. To all of you I pass my sincere sympathies on to you in hopes that you will find comfort knowing a light is shining bright in the sky for Jennifer. A terrible loss of such a wonderful and talented and caring person. I was just a young kid when I met Jennifer through her little brother Jack. She always had a smile and something nice to say. My regards to all of you.
