BERETA – Jozef (Joe) John

June 23, 1920 – November 3, 2010

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our much cherished father. Dad left us peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the age of 90 years, having lived a full life.

Jozef was born in Lwow, Poland on June 23, 1920. His childhood dream was to be a pilot. When WWII started, Dad was in the air cadets. He survived the first years of the war in various prison camps, saw action in Africa and the Middle East and then was fortunate enough to be able to join the 2nd Polish Corps, part of the British Eighth Army in 1943. He was deployed in Italy, fought at Monte Cassino and experienced the liberation of Italy. After the war, Jozef went to work for Phillips in Holand. From there, he immigrated to Canada in 1953. Dad met his beloved wife Kasia at the Polish Community Hall in Calgary. Jozef found employment at Canada Packers as an electrician until his retirement. Dad was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Parish; he was involved with the Polish Combatants Club and was a volunteer for the poppy fund.

Our Dad was a soldier, gentleman, hard worker, and a quiet soul. He became quite a story teller and a charmer in his later years. We would always turn to Dad for his strength and guidance. He will be profoundly missed.

Jozef is the father of three children, Helen, Ted (Lorraine), and Donna; the grandfather of two grandchildren, Mel (Heidi) and Jesse (Katie); and the great grandfather of Zyler-Roque Jozef. Jozef will also be forever remembered by his extended family in Poland. Jozef was the loving husband of predeceased wife Katherine (Kasia).

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Drive N.W.) on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m.  Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.  Condolences may be forwarded through Our heartfelt thanks to the Palliative Care team, especially Kristal, Janice, the night time nurses and also to Comcare Health Service, especially Sandra.  If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Jozef’s honour may be made directly to the Calgary Poppy Fund & Veterans Food Bank, #1, 4539 – 6th Street N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 3Z6, Telephone: (403) 265-6304,

  4. Mervyne Patterson :

My condolences to the Bereta family. Your obituary is of special recognition to him in that I experienced some of his story telling and charm when he came to visit me at the office. He was always eager to chat and indeed a gentleman. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

  5. Your dad’s timeline dates on this earth were measured as June 23, 1920 – Nov. 3, 2010…but I think his most beloved and important dates are contained within the “dash” that separates his birth from his death. Mr. B packed a lot of life into his “dash”. He saw some wonderous sights and sites in this world, and he touched everyone along his path with his kindness and his courage. I will forever miss my Mr. B’s sense of humor and his amazing abilities with plumbing and electrical mysteries that left me throughly perplexed. Memories of past Christmas dinners will be especially in my heart–the elegantly-attired host, presiding over the fabulous dinner table and making sure my plate and glass were never empty. And then there were the presents–I was so touched that he always made sure there was a gift for me under the tree. Your dad was a gentleman and a gentle man, in the truest sense of both those terms. He lived an incredible “dash”.

God bless your dad for the time he spent here with us, and may He continue to keep your family close to His heart.

  6. Kazimiera Matys-Smalec :

To the family of the late Jozef Bereta:

Kazimiera Matys-Smalec and family send their condolences and sympathy.

Your parents, and you their children (Helen, Ted, and Donna) were the first Calgarians, Albertans, and Canadians that my late husband (Frank Smalec) and I met in Calgary.

I spent my first Christmas in Calgary with your family. I am sorry that I couldn’t attend the funeral of your father as I was in the Foothills Hospital for the past 12 days.

May God bless you and keep you all in his care.

    Kazimiera Matys-Smalec and family.
