BENNER – Shirley Eileen (nee Peckover)

November 7, 1933 – March 21, 2011

At the age of 77, after five weeks in ICU following heart surgery, Shirley died as she lived, surrounded by those she loved.

She was born in Vancouver, BC, grew up in White Rock and loved the sea. Once she completed teachers’ training, her adventurous spirit shone through when she moved to Dawson Creek, BC. There she met the love of her life and she and Frank were married August 8, 1959. They enjoyed fifty-one years together. Her life’s work was to serve God and raise her children to know Him. Her creativity was obvious – piano playing, sewing, card making, poetry – and enjoyed by many. Nothing gave Shirley more pleasure than spending time with her family and seeing them enjoying each other.

Shirley will be greatly missed by her husband Frank; children, Ned (Suzanne), Drew (Jacelyn) and Janice (Edgar) Yajure and grandchildren, Luke, Sam, Mikayla, Aiden, Reid, Elena, Mateo and Elias.

Memorial Services will be held at Bonavista Evangelical Missionary Church (1509 Lake Ontario Drive S.E.) on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. You may forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Shirley Benner, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

    Dear Frank and Family,

We’re sorry we won’t be able to be with you this afternoon to celebrate Shirley’s life, but our hearts and prayers are with you all as you say good-bye to her. Frank, you and Shirley hold a special place in our hearts through our years of knowing you at Christian Community Church and being in a small group together. God bless you all at this sad time… but it is wonderful to have the assurance that Shirley’s with Her Savior and that we will all meet again one day. We’ll be sure to get in touch, Frank, and come for a visit later on.

We were so very sorry to hear about Shirley. Velvet Eliuk sent us the memorial on youtube and it was very touching. She had that amazing smile from the beginning to the end. We had heard talk that a CCC reunion might someday be arranged and had a moment of sadness to realize that not everyone would be able to come but there is a better reunion to look forward to and Shirley is already there.
We will be praying for all of you in the next while.

  14. Sophia Weaver :

I was very saddened to hear of Shirley’s death. When I got the subsequent email that gave a glimpse of how her last day went, it actually brought a smile to my face. Shirley was a remarkable woman whose company I really enjoyed. She had the ability to make a person feel like they were the most important person to her. My fondest memories of her are of when I was pregnant with twins in 2003, on strict bedrest, Shirley would come to visit me at home and in RockeyView Hospital. I always looked forward to her visits. After the boys were born, she made beautiful quilt blankets for them that we still have to this day, they will always be cherished.

I’m sorry we missed the memorial service, we had to be away in Edmonton. Shirley has a special place in my heart, memories of her warm smile will stay with me. I’m so sorry she’s not here anymore. My thoughts are with Frank and the rest of the family at this time, her departure will leave a big hole. Rest in Peace sweet Shirley, til we meet again.

I was so sorry to read about my Aunt Shirley’s death. My contact with her through the years was brief due to distance. My childhood memories of her are of her bright smile, and happy nature. She was our Dad’s baby sister, and he adored her. Of all the good things I do remember about my aunt…the most important was her love for God.
