BENGTSSON, Bengt (Ben) Olof

August 24, 1930 – New Westminster, BC
February 15, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

On Sunday, February 15, 2015, Bengt Olof Bengtsson passed away at the Santuari Hospice in Calgary at the age of 84 years. His loving wife Colleen was with him.

Ben was born in New Westminster, BC to Anders and Nora Bengtsson. He grew up and was educated in Sweden but returned to the west coast of Canada when he was 18. His boyhood dream was to become a pilot and he realized that ambition in 1950 when he got his pilot’s licence. Ben spent a large part of his life flying. He started on the West Coast, moved to the NWT and finally settled in Alberta in 1963. He joined Mobil Oil in 1966 and was with their aviation department for twenty-three years. He had a very fulfilling flying career. One of his most memorable achievements was participating in the 1971 London, England to Victoria, BC air race with fellow aviator Hank Coleman in their Beechcraft 18. He was so proud to have been part of this special BC Centennial event. When his flying career ended, Ben had a very rewarding second career buying and selling aviation equipment with his good friend John Binder. Throughout the years and careers, Ben was fortunate to have had many special friendships that came with a life in the aviation industry.

The most special relationship Ben had was with Colleen, his wife of forty-two years. After they were married in 1973, Ben and Colleen travelled to many parts of the world and they had wonderful times together. They have numerous relatives and friends in Canada and Europe who always welcomed them and who were, in turn, welcomed to their Calgary home.

Along with Colleen, left to mourn Ben’s passing are his daughters, Arlene (Jamie) Blair, Joan Zietsoff, and Laurie Fried; his son Wayne (Kitty) Bengtsson and friend Earl Fried. Ben is also survived by his grandchildren, Matt, Robyn, Sacha (Du), Cody (Beth), Ashleigh (Tudor), Sam, and Michelle; and great-granddaughters, Vivien, Veda and Lilia. Ben will be missed too by his extended family in Sweden and Canada, brothers-in-law Joe (Yvonne), Laurie (Sharon), Doug (Marlene) and their families.

A Celebration of Ben’s life will be held at The Elks Lodge and Golf Club (2502, 6th Street NE, Calgary) on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 2:00pm – 5:00 pm with tributes at 2:30pm. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

In living memory of Ben Bengtsson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
