BENDER, Edward Ross

1948 – 2013

Edward Ross Bender beloved husband of Linda of Millarville, AB, passed away with his loving family at his side on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the age of 64 years.

Ed is survived by the love of his life, Linda (nee McLeod) and their much adored children, Emily, Don and his wife Korli. He is also survived by sisters Marlene, Carol (Doug), Shirley and brothers Larry (Betty) and Berkeley (Antia). Ed was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Adeline, and his sister Gloria. Also to mourn his loss are numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and his grandpuppies Olive, Sophie and Dot.

Although born and raised in Paisley, Ontario, Ed has lived in the Calgary area for thirty-five years. He embraced the western lifestyle – skiing, hiking, camping, and just admiring the views of the mountains. He hiked down the backside of Mount Fairview, napped in a tent as it was slightly mauled by a bear and enjoyed other assorted mountain adventures. The best tasting coffee came from his percolator cooked on a Coleman stove and kings did not eat so well as Ed did when he had ‘jack’ cheese and garlic coil served via his buck knife.

Ed made many friends in the Calgary community, through his profession as a Civil Engineer, his involvement with his children’s activities including coaching Emily’s softball team and being a leader for Don’s Scout troop, and last but not least as a good neighbour. Although he loved to travel, his family, his dogs, and his home were always his first priority. Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Friends will be received for a visitation at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, May 31, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W.) on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial donations to Canadian Blood Services would be appreciated by the family. “Give a pint for Ed.” 1 888 2 DONATE (1 888 236-6283). The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the ICU doctors and nurses at the Peter Lougheed Center for the exceptional and compassionate care they gave Ed/Dad. There is no way to properly thank the anonymous blood donors without whom there would not have been any hope for a recovery.

In living memory of Ed Bender, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

  12. Linda, There are no words that work at a time like this, but memories are forever. I remember winning an All Ontario championship with Ed in PeeWee hockey and driving around in his dad’s car because it used company gas and didn’t cost us anything. He used to shut the lights out and drive around at night when we had a full moon. I remember when he wanted to take you out but was scared to death you’d say no. Ed and I and Allan Blue learn to play guitar together. That turned into a partial career for me. Although I didn’t see much of you guys the last 30 years I often thought of you. I am so sorry for your loss

    My Best – Jim Beech
