BEFUS, Joy Edythe

December 22, 1929 – Calgary, AB

February 11, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Joy Edythe Befus passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at the age of 84 years.

Mom enjoyed her career with the Canadian Red Cross for over 35 years retiring in 1997.   Retirement allowed her the time to plan and create her amazing gardens. She would spend hours planting and thoroughly enjoying the beauty of the gardens that surrounded her, sharing the fruits of her labors with her friends and neighbors.  She is also remembered for her remarkable artist abilities whether she was painting, sewing, knitting or creating her ceramic projects.

We have many fond memories of our Mother teaching us along with other children to figure skate at the Bridgeland Committee Centre and on special occasions performing with her skating partner.  When she was not involved with skating she was busy assisting Dad with his coaching of the hockey and baseball teams at the BRCA. Joy is survived by her daughters Pat Befus and Susan Befus and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Albert William Befus.

Friends and Family are invited to join us in the celebration of Mom’s life at St. Peter’s Anglican Church (903 – 75th Avenue S.W. on the corner of Elbow Drive and 75th Avenue S.W.) on Friday, February 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, donations to the Calgary Humane Society (4455 110th Ave. S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7), would be greatly appreciated as this organization was dear to Mom’s heart.

In living memory of Joy Befus, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone:  403-243-8200.

    Dear Befus Family,

I fondly remember Joy from her days at the Canadian Red Cross. What a difference she made every work day – helping to save lives. I recall her energy, friendliness and optimism with fellow staff, volunteers and donors. She was a pleasure to work with.

  2. Bill and Connie Fowle & Family :

Dear Pat and Susan, It was with great sadness that I heard of your Mother’s passing. I was your Mother’s Avon “Lady” for many years and we had a lot of laughs together solving all the City of Calgary’s problems and the world’s. I lost touch with her about four years ago. I do hope those lost years were pleasant ones for your Mom. I know she loved her garden and her dogs. You have my deepest sympathy. Take care of yourselves and may God Bless you both.

  3. Susan and Pat, I had the pleasure of meeting your mother years ago. This was while your dad was coaching our girls’ baseball team at Bridgeland Community, bringing us to City and Provincial champions. You and your sister were very young at the time, and oh so cute. I don’t think you had even started school.
Your mother loved to attend our games, cheering us on, sometimes bringing yourselves and the dog/dogs with her. I think we used your poodle as a mascot one year. She was like a big sister to us. I remember how beautiful and graceful your mother was. My friends and I also had the pleasure of watching her skate, wishing we were all that talented. Your parents certainly maintained the community spirit and were an inspiration to many, including, trying to help us teenagers stay “grounded.” I ‘ve cherished the memories of those good old days.
Wishing you and your families peace at this very difficult time. She will always be with you.
    Pat Lindberg
