BECKER, Diane Marie

August 16, 1942 – Herbert, SK
February 24, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Diane Marie Becker (Shygera, Masson) after a lengthy battle with COPD. Diane passed away quietly on February 24, 2014 at the age of 71 years, at home in the Prince of Peace Manor, Calgary, Alberta.

Born in Herbert, Saskatchewan on August 16, 1942, she grew up on the farm with her family enjoying pastimes of riding horses, driving tractors, curling, and baseball. She always told us how she was such a tomboy, that wearing dresses to school actually was too difficult. One particular refusal even had the school contacting her parents to try to keep her in line! Diane grew up to love curling and participated every year for most of her adult life. She had many trophies and memories to celebrate all of her successes. As a young lady, Diane had left home to work as a telephone operator in Sceptre, Saskatchewan. After that time, she went on to get married and raise her children. Once her children were grown, Diane went back to work in Swift Current, then on to Banff, Alberta, eventually getting a job at the hospital. This led to an adventure of a lifetime when she was hired to work in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. She spent four years in Rhiyad, which also gave her the chance to do some travelling to other surrounding countries. When she moved back to Canada, Diane spent most of her time surrounded by her family and her grandchildren. She never tired of the games and fun the grandchildren brought into her life; they were truly the light of her life.

Diane will be lovingly remembered by her children, Terry, Shelly, Lana (Barry Magdalin) and Randy Masson (Maritess); her grandchildren, Brock Smith (Michelle Somarriba), Braden Smith, Carlie Chenard (PJ Barr), Samantha Chenard (Matt Bottolfs), and Emily Masson; her brothers Don Shygera (Darlene) and Brian Shygera (Jennifer); sister-in-law Elsie Shygera; brother-in-law Pete Driedger; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Diane was predeceased by a sister in infancy, her parents Mary and Harry Shygera, her sister Louise Driedger, and her brother Jerry Shygera. Diane’s kindness, generosity, strength and compassion will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. There will be graveside celebration in Herbert Saskatchewan at the Herbert Cemetery on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Forward condolences through A big thank you to the many friends and family contacting us to express their love.

In living memory of Diane Becker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. CALGARY, AB Telephone: 1-800-661-1599.

Condolence Messages

  1. To the Family of Diane Becker;

    I was deeply saddened to hear of your mother/grandmother’s passing. She was a beautiful lady and brought love and laughter to whoever was in her company. I met ‘Becker’ when I came to work in CSR at the hospital in Banff after your mom/grandma had already retired. She would return to Mineral Springs Hospital to help out whenever we were short of staff. I was greatly impressed by her hard working ethic and her knowhow. She was hilarious beyond words and loved you all so deeply. She couldn’t be prouder of all you children and had such a soft spot for her grandbabies. I shall forever remember her wonderful smile. How she graced us all with her goodness. Bless you all and Love to you all.
    Sincerely Yours, Millie.

  4. Helen (Dyck) Wiebe :

    Sending my condolences to the family on your sad loss. We were neighbors to the Shygera family in the Big Coulee district when Dianne was born. In later years after I was married we were neighbors once more and she was attending Gouldtown public school. My deepest sympathy to all of you. Helen Wiebe.

  5. My condolences to all the family. Diane was a great friend and we had many happy chats sitting on the dock at the Mineral Springs Hospital. Becker always had some great stories about her kids and the farm. She shared stories of her mother and father and I got to know her well. She loved her family so much and her grand children. She would call me from vancouver to tell me what her grand daughter just said and how happy she was there. Her children were very good to her and that made her really proud. I will dearly miss you my good friend and our chats. You were a good friend to me over the years and I hope I was a good friend to you. Love Gwen
