BATES, Iris Emily

November 5, 1916 – Swadlingcote, Derbyshire
October 26, 2013 – Calgary, Alberta

Iris Emily Bates (nee Wilkes), beloved wife of the late Bill Bates, of Derby, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the age of 96 years.

Iris was born on November 5, 1916 in Swadlingcote, Derbyshire. She married Bill Bates in July 1944 and they welcomed their daughter, Sheila on July 17, 1951. A survivor of two World Wars, Iris was dedicated to creating a life she chose. Her determination and strong spirit will always be remembered.

Iris thoroughly enjoyed travelling throughout her life as it allowed her to experience new cultures, meet new people and discover new experiences. Italy and Germany were among her favourite places. Music was always present in her life from playing in a band during her time at Harris House to enjoying opera and big band music throughout her life. Often you could find Iris, whether in the UK or in Canada, enjoying a game of cards or bingo with her friends in the evening. This was time to chatter about the day’s event and solidify friendships.

As she played bingo, cards or enjoyed group activities at Beaver Dam Lodge, often there was a sweet treat next to her. Iris was a serious lover of chocolates, to the point that she even hid them under her bed!
Following the passing of her husband, Iris changed her life and accepted a new challenge as she immigrated to Canada in December 1993.

Iris is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sheila (nee Bates); son-in-law Ian; and granddaughter Rachel and her fiancé Lee. Iris was predeceased by her husband, Bill Bates; parents Ernest and Clara Wilkes (nee Hagues); and brother and sister-in-law, Ernie and Esme.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S, Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through Her family would like to send a sincere thank you to the team at the Rocky View Hospital, who helped to share some laughs with the family and ensured that Iris was comfortable.

In living memory of Iris Bates, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
