BATES, Hugh Alexander

October 18, 1943 – Belfast, Northern Ireland
January 10, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta

Hugh, beloved husband of Margaret Bates (nee Wimmenhove) of Calgary, passed away at home on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the age of 71 years.

Hugh did extensive travelling as a young boy, venturing to Brazil and Australia before arriving back in Northern Ireland. He met and married Carol Briggs, his wife of thirty-nine years. Along with their three children, they immigrated to Canada in 1978, making Calgary their home. Hugh’s civil engineering and management career was spent in the construction industry throughout Western Canada. Several years after Carol’s passing Hugh was blessed to marry Margaret in 2008.

He will be remembered for his bravery, his gentle good humour and kindness to all.

Hugh is survived by his wife Margaret; children, Fiona (Colin), Sarah (Jaysen) and Edward (Daphne); grandchildren, Ashlynn, Owen and Ryan; his faithful four-legged companion Eslin; as well as his sister Edwina (Brian); brother David; and a large extended family. Hugh was predeceased by his parents “Queenie” and Eddie, and his first wife Carol.
