March 4, 1938 – June 16, 2012

Serge Serle Basarsky (D.D.S.) was born on March 4, 1938 and passed away peacefully on June 16, 2012 at the age of 74 years. Born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, he was the eldest of four children of Pearl and Leon Basarsky. Serge graduated from the University of Alberta in 1962 and later that same year moved to Provost where he practiced dentistry for 29 years. After marrying Helen Dredge on April 27, 1962 they raised three children in Provost. Serge was very active in the community, working hard to support youth sporting activities.

Inspired by his work at the Provost Golf Course, at age 53 he retired from dentistry and decided to complete a two-year program in Horticulture – Turf Management at Olds College. Upon graduation, Serge embarked on his second career and spent 11 years as the first horticulturalist at Country Hills Golf Course in Calgary. His landscaping became a trademark of the golf course as he took the course from a barren landscape to a creative, natural, and beautiful space; truly appreciated by many.

When he wasn’t puttering in his yard and on house projects, Serge loved to golf, do crosswords, read, and especially enjoyed playing with his grandson, Ethan. Serge was the penultimate project-man, always willing to jump into many projects – especially for his children. Helen and Serge became snowbirds in 1998 and spent wonderful winters in the California desert. And in February 2012 they celebrated their 50th anniversary in Maui, Hawaii with their entire family.

Serge’s quiet reassuring presence and modest kind nature touched all of those fortunate to know him. Serge is lovingly remembered and will be deeply missed.

In living memory of Serge Basarsky, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane Funeral Home, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE. Telephone: (403) 932-4740.

Condolence Messages

  1. Richard Davis :

To all the family and friends of Serge.
We met at country hill golf course a lot of yrs ago. At the time I was living with a friend, Ron Robertson, which Serge was a co worker with Ron. Shortly after that Serge had moved in to Ron’s place. Serge was always up for a few drinks and a laugh. He had a great sense of humor. We had some fun times together over a few yrs. I will miss him, and I’m sure many other friends he made over the yrs will as well. Rest in peace Serge.

  2. Growing up in rural Alberta figure skating with Teri and Leslie, I remember Serge as being being a loving supportive dad to my two friends. I will never forget his intelligence, sharp wit, and positive outlook. He was just a really loving person – the best dad you could hope for. The world was a better place with him in it.

    Helen & Family,

I have very good memories of many good years with Serge, both around our old arena and especially his hard work and long hours building our golf course. Serge will be fondly remembered by the community of Provost for all of his personal and professional contributions to our town. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend Serge’s service but wanted to let your family know that you are certainly in my thoughts & prayers.

  4. Doug Walters and family :

    To Aunt Helen and family,
I have many good memories of Uncle Serge, from visits to Provost, to shared family trips with my parents( Audie and Ted)and the whole Basarsky clan. I remember the burns at the lake (Etters)and seeing Uncle Serge laughing so hard with Al, Bernard, and Ted, he had tears rolling down his face. I have never seen the man angry, maybe a little, when I took his parking spot in Whitefish in 1988. He will be truly missed and in our thoughts and prayers.

  6. Yasmin & Aziz Lakha :

We were lucky to have known Serge since we moved next door almost twelve years ago. Serge was a man of few words and had a unique way of offering assistance without waiting for any thanks. He had a great sense of humour and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Helen and family,
So sorry. I know I’m late with this but Darrel’s mom died a few days after Serge so I didn’t get to things as soon as I should have. Take care of each other, we’re thinking of you.

  12. Basarsky Family,

I was saddened to hear about Dr. Basarsky’s passing. As Grandpa and Grandma’s neighbours, you guys have always felt like extended family and we speak of you often. I enjoyed working with Dr. Basarsky as a student on the Provost Golf Course and sharing in the accomplishments we worked on together. I will remember him for his friendly & knowledgable conversations, landscaping and horticulture guidance as well as the friendly dentist that handed out toothbrushes at Halloween :). Its good to hear you were able to spend a wonderful vacation as a family in Hawaii for your 50th Anniversary. Its good to know that you had that quality time together as a family. My thoughts are with you. Love Always,

    Lee Mailer
