  4. Donna and Gaylene – My husband and I used to spend our winters in Arizona. That is where we became friends with your Mom and Dad. There were many visits in Calgary and lots of time talking long distance when a trip to Arizona was no longer possible.

    I was truly sad to hear of Lydia’s passing. She will be missed by all who knew her. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time.

  5. I met Lydia only a few months ago when she moved in the Sierras. I admired her love for life, people, and her desire to be helpful to all those she came in touch with. I had a few quiet conversations with her as I was going through a hard time myself having lost my husband in 2011. She brought a lot of love and laughter in my life. To Donna, Gaylene and all your family members, my thoughts are with you. The great times you had with her will help you all accept her loss and she will bring to each of you Peace, Love and Joy.

  6. Dear Donna & Ed; Gaylene, Doug & family;
    It is with mixed feelings I convey this message of sympathy. This is because I understand your mother had taken ill and passed away fairly quickly. It is without a doubt, you would have wished for more time to spend with her. But, given she did not linger long in great pain, that small mercy seems like a blessing.

    To me, life is a collection of small moments (hopefully) stored for future benefit. Undoubtedly, I am not always aware of when or why they will resurface. But, upon hearing of Aunt Lydia’s passing, these moments came to mind for me:

    Our parents and an uncle and another aunt from Saskatchewan were socializing, affixed to their kitchen chairs, and engaged in their ritualistic card game and fine banter that was always present. I was young and playing in and out of the kitchen and living rooms of my parent’s home. Usually, I was quite happy to play without parental oversight, yet I was constantly returning to the kitchen, the room with all the grown-ups. I conceded this was partially due to a child’s curiosity, yet there was something else. There was a safe, good feeling in that kitchen. It was like a warm inviting vortex gently pulling you back in.

    Quickening me to investigate was hearing Aunt Lydia’s infectious laughter. She always had an engaging smile and just as often a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She also had a competitive spirit and didn’t often lose at the games, two traits passed on lovingly to her girls.

    My wish for you today is to be surrounded by these kinds of feelings and enjoy an atmosphere of love and support, comforted by family and dear friends as you mourn the passing of your mother, my aunt Lydia.

    With deepest sympathies,
    Your cousin, Dale Lukacs
