BARRETT – Janice Margaret (nee Hurd)

June17, 1939 – February 15, 2010

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Margaret Barrett beloved wife of Gregory Ward Barrett of Calgary, mother of Catherine (Ian Young) and David (Jorgen Neilsen) and proud grandmother of Elise.

Born in Essex, Janice grew up in post-war London and Kent, trained as a teacher and taught young children as well as starting and promoting a Playgroup movement. She married Gregory on April 21st, 1962 and they moved to Canada in 1971 immediately calling Calgary home. Again she became involved in early childhood education and then with Calgary’s YWCA, serving on several committees, the Board of Directors, as President, and latterly the Alumnae. In the ‘80s she changed career paths once more moving into office administration, working with the YWCA, becoming part of the excitement of opening the new Talisman (then Lindsay Park) Sports Centre, the 1988 Olympics and eventually with a private company.

Over the years she was blessed with making many friends, particularly after moving to an over 40s condo complex, where she felt her life just kept getting better. She wished to remember and thank all these people for their comradeship and pure love (they know who they are). She said that it was after she developed cancer that she really came to appreciate the meaning of the word love.

Just prior to passing she wrote that she leaves her family to reminisce, laugh over funny stories and slap their foreheads at her impossible gaffes; she promises to do better next time. Her family isn’t quite sure how that would be possible.

A Celebration of Janice’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (82 Crowfoot Circle NW) on Monday, February 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to the YWCA at (www.ywcaofcalgary.com).

In living memory of Janice Barrett, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot Chapel, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W. Telephone: (403) 241-0044.

  2. Colleen O'Brien :

Dear Greg, I am sorry to hear of Jan’s passing, and remember her as a beautiful, kind neighbor at Sierras. You and she also introduced me to the Kirby Center, and I appreciate that and remember each time I go there! I will also think of her when I am at the Tallisman Center. Love, Colleen O’Brien

  3. Dear Greg,

my memory of Jan will always be of her tenacity. Perhaps you’ll remember one of Ellie James’ early canoe trips. I think Jan was President, then, but not so much into formal exercise. Ellie had me jogging most days so I thought I could keep up with Jan. But she out did me — in the rain, sleeping on stones, eating stale peanut butter sandwiches –tenacity and a positive outlook (or perhaps you were doing all the heavy paddling?)

  4. Dear Greg and Family,

Please accept my sincere condolences. I have many fond memories of working with Jan in the YWCA days of the late 70’s and early 80’s.

May all your warm and happy memories replace the grief and sadness you feel now.

    Warm regards,
    Sandi Carlile

  5. Dear Greg and family,
I am so sad to hear of Jan’s passing. She was such a wonderful person. I will always remember her with a big smile on her face and such a positive and productive attitude. She cared about people and made everyone feel that they were special and important. I am sad that I did not have the opportunity to chat with Jan recently but with her big personality, I will remember her always.

  6. Annette and Don Martin :

Dear Greg and family, I have fond memories of Jan, although many years ago now! She was often the first person to say a cheery “Good morning” as I would pass through Registration on my way to my office. I was looking at an old photo album the other day and smiled at a picture of Jan from our famous YWCA Halloween parties! Our deepest condolences, Annette and Don Martin

  7. Dear Greg and Family, I just returned home from being away and heard the sad news about the recent passing of Jan.
I knew and worked with Jan at the YWCA in the 1980’s. I have such fond memories of Jan’s positive and energetic ways, her laughter and big smile were infectious. She will be missed greatly.
