BARR, Rae Marion (nee Slump)

June 8, 1943 – June 21, 2012

Rae Barr passed away peacefully in Calgary, on June 21. Grandma Rae Barr was larger than life. Everyone who knew her was touched by her love of life and her kindness. She was an amazing powerhouse of energy who cheered people up when she was around. Rae had a great sense of humor and her laughter filled the room, her smile was contagious. With Grandma Rae, everyone was welcome to her home and there was always room and food for more. She had a huge heart and never gave up on anyone. She was always giving and never receiving. She was truly one of the greatest volunteers of all time. She never said no to anyone asking for help.

Always an entertainer, Grandma was the life of the party and the one to leave. She played her guitar until her fingers bled. Many a sing songs were led by Grandma… she always had a way of bringing people together whether it was on the ball field, golf course or curling rink; at family reunions and parties, or her favourite place on earth… the arena.

Grandma had many interests and hobbies over the year, but her greatest passion was her grandchildren, Cody, Andie, Jake and Dillon. Ever present, no matter when or where, she was there to cheer them on. She was their greatest fan, and she proved this by flying all over the world to give her support. Grandma passed this support onto all of her grandchildren’s teammates as a result, they all called her Grandma and they will miss her deeply too. Grandma touched a lot of lives and because of this, no one had more friends than her. A true sign of what she had to offer.

Grandma leaves behind her greatest fans, Bob, Marianne, Hummer, Suzy, Paris, Cody, Andle, Jake, Dillon, Ernie and Elvena, Sandy and Wayne, Val, Judy and Terry, and Merle and Stu. Grandma, you inspired us, supported us, and unconditionally loved us. You made us laugh, and it tears our hearts out that now you made us cry. We love you to pieces now and forever. You made everyone you met a better person. We only wished we could have had a chance to read your book… It would have been a best seller.

Celebrations for Rae’s Life will take place on June 29 at Valerie Wilson’s House (42053 Township Road just south of Cochrane) at 2:00pm. A second one will take place July 14 at Golden, BC in the Civic Center at 6:00pm. Both celebration are drop in when you can, and are informal.

Condolence Messages

  1. There are so many memories our family would like to share about Rae but this would end up a manuscript.
Our girls enjoyed Rae’s presence & encouragment during their figure skating years in Golden before moving to Cranbrook in 1970.
Since then both Rae & Bob have alway’s been part of our families special occasions ‘including a most memorable weekend in Las Vegas to celebrate our 25th.
A long standing joke between us since then is, “‘Will see you in the morning close the door when you leave Rae 🙂
We wish we could have said these words just one more time.

I really do not know what to say to you. What a huge loss! I have such fond memories of Rae, we had such a good visit on the phone a year ago and I felt that I was totally in her company at the time, she also told me about her book! The visit we had was so special and now I am knowing the reason. I am thinking about coming to Golden for the memorial there, we’ll see. Please know my thoughts are with you all.

  5. Shelley Cumberland :

Mar, Suzy, Bob and families, so sorry. I saw her last 4 years ago at my dad’s funeral. She said, “I just had to come because I knew you would be here…” she had a way of making everyone feel just a little bit special. Rae was a familiar face to me behind home plate, growing up, umping our ball games. There were no balls and strikes, just… oh.. that one was a little low… oh.. that one was a little outside, then turn to the batter… oh that one was a pretty good one. I dont know if anyone ever really knew what the count was. I am sure there would have been a few colourful stories from our dressing room at the Golden arena in her book.. she always said… you girls, be careful, I am going to write a book… Well, the world seems a little less colourful today. She was a great lady, someone hard to forget.
