March 8, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Albert A. “Al” Barker, 66, of Calgary, AB on Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Al was born on the April 22, 1947 in Halifax County, NS to Albert (Abby) and Jean Barker who raised him in Tufts Cove. In 1964, he joined the military, and following his basic training, went to Germany. When he returned to Canada, he met the love of his life Moira, and they married in Calgary, AB in 1969. In 1972, their oldest son Michael was born. Then, in 1974, the family was posted to Germany. There they welcomed their second son Neal in 1975. Al and his family returned to Canada in 1978, and lived in Oromocto, NB, and in 1981, they welcomed their third son David to the family. A year later, Al was posted again, and this time the family moved to Calgary, AB. 1986 found their family moving to Kelowna, BC and 1989 brought them back again to Calgary, AB where Al finished his military service in 1993. Al worked for a few years at Totem, and then joined Canadian Tire working at the hunting desk in the sports department. In 1996 and 1997, he watched his oldest son Michael marry Sheryl and welcomed their first daughter Michelle, his first grandchild. That same summer he also saw his son Neal marry Renea. 1998 brought two more grandchildren for Al and the family, a grandson Eric and his second granddaughter Moira. In 1999, Al was involved in a serious accident that left him in a wheelchair. Through his trials and tribulations, he learned to adjust and adapt to a new way of life. Al saw his youngest son David marry Christilea in 2010, and that same year he welcomed his third granddaughter Mya to the family. Over the years, he also added his chosen grandchildren, Kristian, Emily and Dean. Al was predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law.

Fairways of Glory

A dedication to the endless pursuit
Of the perfect game
Fond memories of the challenges
Of the greens and the trials of its traps
And now, the last putt has dropped
Into the cup of life
And the light of day has faded
Lord, It is now on your fairway of glory
That the game will continue to be played.

In living memory of Al Barker, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.
