BALL, Mary Jean (nee Evans)

BALL, Mary Jean (nee Evans)
January 25, 1924 – Stocks, Alberta
November 5, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy but peaceful hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Jean Ball (née Evans).

Mom is survived by her six children, Bruce (Louise Clozza), Linda (John Colberg), Lois (Henry Lesser), Pam Dart (Barry Cardamone), Darcy (Maja) and David (Anette); her 18 grandchildren and her 13 great-grandchildren.

To each of us, Mom left a legacy of gracefulness, kindness, fairness and humour. Mom had a never-ending love for family and she welcomed every addition with open arms and bountiful kisses.

Mom was predeceased by her loving husband, Fred (Ted), four siblings, Carol Allenby, Gwen Dunsby, John Evans and Phyllis Holmes, her son-in-law Rick Dart, and her grandson-in-law, James Hoshizaki.

Mom was born in Stock, Alberta to Sarah and John Evans. After graduating high school, Mom went to secretarial school in Edmonton. In 1944 she married her forever sweetheart, Ted, and together they worked on the family farm in Boyle. When Ted started a career with the Alberta Wheat Pool, Mom continued to support him as they moved their family to Athabasca, Drumheller, Winnipeg and Calgary.

As a young woman, Mom enjoyed baking, sewing and curling. There was always fresh bread and cinnamon buns on Wednesday and Saturday. Once her family was grown, Mom had more time to pursue her interests which included oil painting and playing bridge. After Dad retired, they enjoyed exploring Canada and the U.S. in their motor home. Mom lived a peaceful and rewarding life until dementia took over.

We thank the staff at Brentwood Care Centre for the care they gave Mom. Although Mom was losing her battle, our friends at Brentwood commented that Mom continued to demonstrate her quick wit and warm humour.

The family will have a Celebration of Life at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, Suite 201, 222 – 58th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3, Telephone: (403)290-0110, Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Mary Ball, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
