BALL, Jan “Christian”

September 8, 1972 – August 2, 2012

Christian Ball of Calgary, Alberta passed away tragically on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton at the age of 39 years.

Christian is survived by his mother Lindsay and her husband Patrick O’Dwyer of Eagle Bay, BC; his father Kenneth Ball and his wife Lise of Summerland, BC; his brother Jonathan Ball and sister-in-law Mikie Mork of Okotoks; his sister Lauren and brother-in-law Andrew Upper of Mission, BC, a niece Kristian Upper and twin nephews Arran and Matthew Upper. He was predeceased by his beloved grandmother Rosamond Duggan in 1996, and grandmother Winnifred (Nye) Ball Cotter in 1985.

Chris moved to Calgary from Hampton N.B. with his family in 1980. He attended Midnapore Elementary School, Elboya Junior High and graduated from Western Canada High school.

He later attended Mount Royal College and graduated from Simon Fraser University with a BA in Criminology in 1998.

Following university, Chris worked at Hull Home for Boys for several years, and then formed his own slate and tile installation company, Barefoot Tile, which he owned and operated for ten years.

In December, 2011 Chris joined Weatherford Canada in the Drilling Services Division, with involvement in the drilling of horizontal and directional oil and gas wells.

Chris’ life was multi-facetted. Chris was extremely creative, enjoying all kinds of art work, building, interior design, costume creations and funky mementoes from places he visited. He loved working on his various cars, especially his 1967 Pontiac Acadian which was his first car purchased at 15 and his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Chris was a great friend to all those who knew him both past and present and was a special pal to his beloved big white dog Roxy. He was a “spark” in this world and could create humor out of the smallest bit of nothing. His smile was infectious.

Chris’ violent and untimely death has caused unimaginable grief to his family and many friends who hope and pray that those responsible will be brought to justice.

Those wishing to participate in visitation may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary) on Friday, August 10, 2012 from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A formal Funeral Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary) on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

AFter many years of serving as a peace officer with the RCMPolice throughout Canada I know how a violent incident that has caused Chris’ untimely death must effect his loved ones. Our hearts and prayers go out to them. We especially want to say we also feel the pain of his absense even though we might have been only neighbours living across the street. We knew and loved him for his friendly helpful nature and the the kind consideration he gave to those around him. He will be missed! May all of those who had known him be comforted in this unexpected tragedy.

  5. I never had the pleasure of meeting Chris even though he was my second cousin. I can tell I would have liked him. I recall meeting the rest of the family on Salt Spring Island several years back and it was good to spend time together as a part of my family that I hadn’t known before. My heart goes out to you in this time of sorrow. As you begin to feel Chris around you in many different ways, may your sorrow ease a little and your hearts be healed. With love and condolences to all.

I am deeply saddened by Chris’ untimely death and my thoughts and prayers go out to Kara and his family during this extremely difficult time. Chris was our nextdoor neighbour and we are very fortunate to have spent some time together and got to know one another. We were so lucky to have such an amazing and friendly guy like Chris as our neighbour. He had such an infectious smile, warm personality and always made us laugh and smile. It makes me so sad that we didn’t get to spend more time together.

We will never forget you buddy and will miss you always. Until we meet again…

Chris worked with us at our home several times in the last 5 years. It was a pleasure to spend time talking to him as he worked so skilfully. Chris had a real eye for detail and his suggestions always helped. Once or twice he really bailed us out of trouble – he just did the right thing to help without being asked. Our thoughts & prayers are with the family.

  17. Christian
We have known you from being that baby in Hampton whose proud parents were our first Canadian friends when we arrived in New Brunswick in 1973. We lived next door in the house your dad built and where your mum introduced us to life in the Maritimes. As a baby boy you began life`s journey as a playmate to our kids, Zoe and Mathew. Those Winters tobogganing and the Summers swimming in the pool or the Kennebecasis River.
The lives of our families and yours then criss-crossed over nearly 40 years. Memories of you living in Midnapore, Calgary and growing up with your elder sister and brother, Lauren and Jonathan. Christmases and being spoilt as a young teenager by his loving grandma….some turbulent days at Western Canada High. Then the discovery of a horse and life at the stables near our place in Millarville.
You were now that strange mix of an awkward but brash young man at your brother`s wedding where we all stood by the Shuswap Lake under the stars for that midnight campfire. The artistry and skill you had with tile and slate showed us a new side to Christian Ball. Everything you did Christian you did it your way with all your energy. Throughout all this time was one constant we all could see which was the unstinting love of her son by your mother, Lindsay. She always believed in and supported you in whatever you did. There were many others too who grew to know and like you.
We wish you farewell today…… you are at peace and you will always be a part of our lives Christian.

    John, Sheila, Zoe and Mathew

Dear Lindsay and all the family, our thoughts and prayers remain with you at what is an unimaginably difficult and sad time.

I met Chris 16 years ago when Lindsay kindly put us up in her house while we visited for Stephanie & Tim’s wedding. He was friendly and funny even though I’m sure he had been turned out of his room to make way for us!

We will continue sending wishes of support and comfort.

  22. Dear Lindsay,
Most sincere condolences are being sent from the Maritimes at this time of your tragic loss. There can be no greater loss nor pain than losing an offspring. And to lose one in a senseless manner is even more heart wrenching. Please know that your school friends are sharing your sorrow and pray that you will find comfort in your friends and family.

  25. My heartfelt condolences to you Pat & Lindsay, words cannot say how much sadness we are feeling for you and the family. I met Chris for really for the first time when we were all in Mexico together and we hit it off right away. I loved his wacky sense of humour and I will miss him dearly. Sadly he won’t be there in March when we go down to Puerto Morelos next year, but we will be thinking of him and his spirit will be with us on that beautiful beach. RIP buddy.

I knew Chris when he and Gumby were an inseparable pair. Chris was a fearless rider. We had so much fun in those days riding the trails. Our paths crossed a few times in the last 30 years. I guess Kevin and I didn’t change much because Chris would always recognize us even though we didn’t recognize him. His death is tragic. My prayers are with you.
