BAKK, Mihaly Alexander

May 11, 1939 – Budapest, Hungary
September 29, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta

Mihaly Bakk, beloved husband of Cleofas Bakk of Calgary, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2014 at the age of 75 years.

Mike was born May 11, 1939 in Budapest, Hungary. He was only 17 when the Soviet tanks rolled into the city. Along with other young citizens he engaged the enemy during the 1956 Revolution that followed. It was because of the personal peril in which his actions placed him after defending his country that he was forced to flee the place of his birth. He was proud of his Magyar heritage and visited Hungary a couple times years later. Despite having witnessed the invasion of his homeland as a youth and enduring the struggle to adapt alone to a new life in Canada he prospered and devoted most of his time and effort to enriching the lives of his family.

Mike was educated as an architect and, through hard work and perseverance, acquired several revenue properties throughout Calgary where he lived since the early 1960’s. During his life he worked as a crane operator in the steel industry, a taxi driver and, in his final years, a Commissionaire. Though he worked constantly Michael enjoyed hobbies through his life such as martial arts, chess and ballroom dance. He studied forestry engineering as a young man and had a love of mature trees. He found a sense of serenity in the natural world and enjoyed observing animals, noting how peaceful and content they appeared in their natural condition.

A loving father, husband and grandfather, he enjoyed time with his family right up to his final days when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and asbestosis. He was an unselfish man who seldom rested and always lived to make others lives better. None remember a time when he did not place the interests and welfare of his loved ones above his own.

Mike is survived by his son Michael Bakk Jr. (Minda) and grandchildren Krystal, Marianna and Michelle.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, October 5, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m.

In living memory of Mihaly Bakk, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
