  5. Rudolph Ackloo & family :

    Dear Vidi:

I am deeply hurt and in shock at the tragic news of the death of my dear and beloved friend Tony. We first met at a family social in Edmonton in the mid-1970s and since then our friendship has been a strong bond. We were more than friends; we were brothers. We worked for years at the STELCO plant.

Tony was at my wedding, a brother to my younger brother and someone to confide in at all times. Tony is the God Father to my son Kenny who is still in shock and can’t believe that his Uncle Tony is no more.

Our two families were to have met in Winnipeg this Saturday for a mutual friend’s daughter’s wedding. I had planned to give my friend Tony and Vidi a surprise but dear Tony will not be there. My heart is aching with pain as I write.

Just a few years ago, I received a call from Tony. I was struggling to speak as I had just returned from the hospital. Tony wanted to know what happened, and I told him I was recuperating from cancer operation. Both of us couldn’t speak for a while.

Tony will be remembered for his love, humility, compassion and kindness by all who were touched just for knowing him. In the heart of Edmonton’s severe winter in January 1981, Tony diligently took life saving mother’s milk for my son (his God son) Kenny, who was in the intensive care unit. He made the trip several times a day for weeks. Thank you Tony for caring!

Our prayers are with you Vidi, Amanda, Aaron and the extended family. May you all have comfort in knowing that your loss is felt by all of us who met, loved and just knew him. Your loss is ours for his heart was big enough to accommodate all of us.

I pray that God will give you all strength and courage as you prepare to take him to his final resting place.

    Will always love forever Tony!

Rest in Peace my dear brother Tony!

  6. Dear Aunty Vidi:

My thoughts and prayers are with you all in this hour of great loss and sorrow. I am still trying to come to terms with the news of Uncle Tony’s sudden death.

In just a few days we were all going to meet and it was going to be a surprise for Uncle Tony. But this was not to be Aunty Vidi. I was looking forward to socializing with my God Father but instead I will be preoccupied with thoughts of the last rites for Uncle Tony.

I wanted to say “Thank you Uncle Tony” for feeding me as a baby as you took shifts with my Mom and Dad to be with me at the hospital. Instead Uncle Tony, I must speak to the many pictures I have with you. Thank you Uncle Tony for your love!

Aunty Vidi, please know that I am praying for God to give you, Amanda, Aaron and the rest of the family the strength and courage to cope with the difficulties in the coming days.

I will cherish the wonderful and loving memories of Uncle Tony for years to come. His love and affection will continue to be an inspiration to me.

Thank you Uncle Tony for your love and being an excellent example of a kind human being.

I will always love and cherish your memory!

Rest in Peace my God Father, Uncle Tony!

  38. Dear Vidya, Aaron & Amanda,

I wish to extend my heart-felt sympathy and condolences to you all in this hour of sadness. My family and many of Tony’s friends from around the world, who have contacted me via e-mail, also commiserate with you.

Tony was a kind and trusted friend, one who could be relied on to do anything for you. For example, when I was single and still renting and did not yet own a garage, he let me park my prized red corvette in his garage while I took off a on a spring vacation to Jamaica. It was the safest place I could have parked it for those two weeks and still have it when I returned.

He was an accomplished pool player who did not like to lose. Out of ten games, I would win maybe two and that did not go over too well with Tony. He was such a competitor. He was elected president of the C&DCL one year and did make a difference. After his tenure about twenty tears ago, he left cricket and took up other interest like golfing and duties with the Guyanese/Canadian Cultural Association until his passing. His loss is incalculable, especially to his loving family!

    He will be dearly missed.

    Aaron,

I am thinking of your Dad today as I played one of the CD’s in the car that we played previously on our way to a golf game – the song we shared reminded us of how lucky we were to marry two of the most difficult and special women in the world!

We loved life and had no idea time was short – we both had plans for the future. I shed one single tear for my friend (your father) and my defender who always expressed amazement at my success despite my aggressive style and work ethic. It is a little harder to function now knowing that he is not around to provide advice and hear my stories of success in the government. His listening made my life a little easier. Without him I don’t think I can continue too much longer in the federal public service. But I’ll try as I know he’d be proud of me!

    To Vidi, Amanda and Aron,
I have not spoken about my feelings for my elder brother Tony as it is always a crushing feeling when I am reminded so many times, on so many occasions, through so many journeys to and from Calgary.

Although my message is probably the latest, I do so writing it as I know that you are feeling my thoughts and hearing my words as our short lived relationship was one of such pleasure, graced with genuine and deep mutual feelings for each other and family. You truly are the closest that a brother ever can impact on another.

Although our time together was short, you filled the years with so many unforgettable moments, stories and lessons, that make a younger brother into a better man, as he continues without your physical presence. Your lessons of life to me are enduring and will live forever and pass on to my daughters who also always feel your presence.

Tony, I apologize for not picking up the game of golf as yet, in spite of the excellent book you gifted me. While this book remains an ornament, I am constantly reading and reflecting on the words of Khalil Gibran – The Prophet. You must have intended me to be so engaged!

My girls, Amanda and Melissa are well into their career now and your days of being that immediate father in Calgary are always remembered. I do not know any family who gives love so generously to others like you, Vidi, Amanda and Aron. You were called upon to do things and you always delivered in spades.

I never forget the time when my Amanda called me well past midnight from her apartment while in Calgary studying for her MBA to tell me ” Dad, there is a mouse in the apartment and you have to come right now to get rid of it”. This was a bit of a challenge for me as I live in Edmonton and could not be as instantaneous, so the job was deferred to Uncle Tony and your Amanda. Your prompt action solved the problem while I went back to bed.

While there are too many regrets of not having your physical presence, your wonderful family and extended family like Raj, Shanti and Ashvin are still very close to our hearts and I owe you so much for leaving us the legacy that is Tony and Uncle Tony. I am so glad that on one occasion when you visited us in Edmonton, I did not take your advice and opened that very special single malt which was a collector’s treasure – the Balvene 1993 and you and I enjoyed and enjoyed, ,,,,.

You are a respected elder brother and jigri dost. You are always in our hearts and we will forever love you.

    Ravi, Lynette, Amanda and Melissa
