Baczynski, Helena

July 11, 1928 – October 6, 2014

Helena Baczynski passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Monday, October 6, 2014 at the age of 86.

Helena was born in Zarki, Poland. During the Second World War she and other family members were sent to a German work farm. After the war Helena and her family moved to Gilow, Poland where she met her husband and started a family. She immigrated to Canada with her husband and three children in 1964. After settling in Melfort, Saskatchewan she was instrumental in setting up the family business. She encouraged, supported and ensured the education of all of her children. After all the children left home, Helena moved to Calgary where she made new friends, developed new interests and was close to her children and extended family. Helena’s priority was always her family and she passed along these values to her children and grandchildren.

Gardening was a particular passion for Helena throughout her adult life. Under her care and nurturing the vegetables and flowers flourished despite the challenges of a Canadian growing season. The care that she took with her garden was much like the care and diligence she showed in raising her family. Helena’s Polish cooking was enjoyed by everyone – in particular the lavish Christmas Eve celebrations which she prepared. She provided the foundation and support upon which three generations were able to grow and thrive.

Helena was predeceased by her infant son Henri, her parents Jan and Weronika Miszczyk and her husband Agenor Marian Baczynski. Helena is survived by her children Anne (Alan) Glessing, Robert Baczynski and Teresa (Dan) O’Byrne; grandchildren James (Leah) Glessing, Michael (Sara) Glessing, Mathew (Lois) Glessing, Kristyn O’Byrne and Teryn O’Byrne; and great-grandchildren Brayden Glessing, Ethan Glessing, Isla Glessing and Aria Glessing. She is also survived by one sister, four brothers and other family in Poland.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Name Catholic Church (2223 – 34th Street S.W.) on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Edenbrook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
