BACH, Florence Mary

BACH, Florence Mary obituaries

May 1, 1916– Gladys, AB
August 15, 2013 – Calgary, AB

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Florence Bach at the age of 97 years.

Florence was born at Gladys, AB on May 1, 1916. She graduated from high school in High River, AB in 1934. Florence then attended Calgary Normal School after which she began a long and rewarding teaching career. She taught at several one room schools in southern Alberta during the 1930s and 1940s. Florence married James Ridley in May, 1941. James was killed in action during WWII. In 1946, she began studies at the University of Alberta. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1948. Soon after, Florence met Harold Bach and they were married on September 4, 1948. They moved to Calgary where Florence continued to teach. In 1968, Florence completed her Diploma in Education (library studies and children’s literature) at the University of Calgary. After receiving her diploma, she became the head teacher librarian at Lakeview Elementary. She held that position from 1968 to 1980 at which time she retired from her many years of devotion to the teaching profession. Through her teaching, Florence touched so many lives. She will be deeply missed. After retirement, Florence and Harold spent many years at their cottage on the Shuswap Lake in British Columbia and later at their home in Salmon Arm, BC. In 1991, they returned to Calgary to be closer to their family.
Florence was an avid reader. She enjoyed travelling and seeking out new opportunities for learning. She loved to dance and thoroughly enjoyed being with family and friends. Shopping for the latest fashions always brought her such great pleasure.

Florence will be sadly missed by her two sons Greg and Randy; and one daughter and son-in-law Michele and Gordon Titchener. Florence is also survived by her sister Gwen McLean (Robert); brother Keith McKeage (Norma); as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. Florence was predeceased by her husband of sixty-two years, Harold Bach in December, 2010. Florence was also predeceased by her brother Ernest McKeage, and sister Jean Fath (Raymond).

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W.) on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Condolence Messages

  1. Hello: My name is Walter Ridley, the last surviving family member of James Ridley, Florence’s first husband.
I send my sincere sympathy, but also my thanksgiving that my wife Mary Ann and I were able to visit Florence three times during the last several years when we were in Calgary. She was such a beautiful person in all respects – including her hand writing. I am impressed by the well written and informative obituary. I learned many things about Florence throughout her long active life.
May God’s blessing be with you all.
    With my love,
    Walter Ridley

  2. Michele Titchener :

    Dear Walter,

We want to thank you for your warm and thoughtful words. Mom always told us about your visits and how much she enjoyed them. Losing Jim was such a terribly difficult time in her life. It is wonderful that you kept in touch with her. She truly appreciated it. Thank you again for your kindness.
    All our love,
Michele (Florence’s daughter) for the Bach Family.
