ASPLUND – Cary Dean

May 2, 1991– April 28, 2011

The family and friends of Cary Dean Asplund remember with great joy their son, brother, nephew, team-mate, boyfriend and close friend, who tragically passed away in a car accident on the afternoon of Thursday, April 28, 2011.

Cary graduated in 2009 from Western Canada High School, and had just returned from his first semester at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS.

Cary was often described as a quiet leader, reliable and hard-working. His fun-loving spirit was evident in everything he did, from socializing to excelling at soccer to drumming in his band to his adventures last year through Central and Latin America. He was forever battling to meet and beat challenges – math, soccer, talking to girls, or anything he didn’t really want to do – BUT he did it with a smile on his face! His easy- going and happy demeanour changed his friends’ outlooks on life and Cary told them not to take life so seriously, but to chill. He inspired his friends to do what they loved to do. He was a very caring, compassionate and loyal person, and had a knack for making people feel accepted, loved and that they were important to him. Cary’s family and friends meant everything to him, and he was very proud of his Swedish heritage. Cary loved, protected and cherished his brother Beau, who calls him his role model and hero, and every day made sure he was okay. Cary will be missed forever by all who knew him.

Cary will be missed dearly by his mother Brenda, father Per, and brother Beau, as well as grandma Michener; aunts Barb (Barry), Bev (Clive), Kajsa (Arne), Kitten (Tomas); his cousins Rickard, Sherri, Michelle and Lindsay; and Gracie our loving cat. Cary was predeceased by his grandpa Keith, Farfar Yerker, and Farmor Mary Dean.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Calgary Winter Club (4611 14 Street N.W., Banquet Hall entrance second level) on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

I was so sorry to hear what happened to Cary this past week. Nothing I can say will make this devastating event any easier to bear but I wanted you to know I’m thinking of you all. Cary is the only child whose name I recall from my first year in Sunalta, when he introduced himself as, “I’m Cary, as in Cary Grant”. Who could forget that? I remember him well as a wonderful student and friend to everybody. He’ll be missed.
    Sincerely,
    Deirdre Richardson

  4. Carey was one of Lauchlin’s most cherished friends and one out of that bunch of ruffians that Anne and I never tired of. Carey the quiet achiever, a leader on and off the pitch, and that polite good looking boy who always was willing to spend a minute to humour the myriad of questions from the ‘parents’ on the details of that day’s or night’s planned activities. He was part of the fabric of the neighbourhood and is already profoundly missed. We are devastated on the loss of such a promising young man – his passing just reminds us how precious those damn kids are no matter what shenanigans they may get into as well as how fleeting life is. Our hearts are heavy and full of compassion for you all – we wish we were able to join in the celebration of a wonderful, albeit short, life. Much love from the Toms family (Sydney Australia).

    Dear Brenda,
This comes from Camrose. Although I have not had the chance to meet your son Cary, I heard so much about him from my boys, Chris and Aaron. They are the Roofers he worked for last year and was to resume work with next week. Chris, in particular, will miss him dearly. He saw him as a friend with whom he enjoyed several outings outside work. They shared many similar interests in snowboarding, moutain climbing, and music. Both my boys are in complete shock, as you and your family must be. As a mother, I feel your pain and pray for God’s comfort to help you go on. From what I heard and read about Cary, he touched many people in his short life. He was a real gift. My sincere condolences on this awful loss.

Fina minnen. MInnen att vårda ömt.

  85. Liz Leuschner Steve Wilson and Rachel, True and Layton Wilson :

There are never adequate words to address the reversal of the natural order of things. Our daughter Rachel, a commerce colleague of Cary’s at Dalhousie was shaken to the core and True had to take the oppurtunity to consider the loss of his own brother. All of us reflected about the importance of each other. It is so maddening it takes such a tragedy to bring it home. Our prayers are with you.
