Ashbourne (nee MacKinnon), Connie (Constance Fraser)

Constance Fraser Ashbourne, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008 at the age of 83 years after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Connie was born September 16, 1924 in Saint John, NB where she lived until she graduated from Saint John High School in 1941. In 1945 she graduated with a BSc in Nutritional Science from MacDonald College at McGill University. While living in Brantford, ON Connie met Jack, the love of her life. In 1949 Jack and Connie married in Saint John and settled in Dartmouth, NS, where they had four children, Gail, John, Judy and Elizabeth.  In 1970 Connie and her family ventured west to settle in Calgary where Connie and Jack immediately became avid fans of the Calgary Stampeders. In both Nova Scotia and Alberta Connie was active in many volunteer and philanthropic activities. She was very involved with St. James United Church in Dartmouth, and later in Calgary with Knox United Church. Connie was an intelligent, beautiful woman who loved life, her children and seven grandchildren, Jenny, Jessica, Scott, Patrick, Riley, Anna and Connor who knew her as Nanan. She was a baker extraordinaire, enjoyed the outdoors, loved to travel, but was happiest walking the dogs in Fish Creek Park with Jack. Connie lived with dignity and exuded vitality and good humor, even as she battled the ravages of Alzheimers. In 2000 Connie moved to the Bethany Care Centre, where she was lovingly cared for by Judy and Florence, and more recently Shirley, to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for the love and attention they lavished on Mom. Connie will be sadly and deeply missed by all who knew her, and most especially by her loving children and grandchildren. We thank everyone at Memory Lane in the Bethany Care Centre for their kind and attentive care.
Connie is survived by Gail, John (Carolyn Brown), Judy (Jim Bruder) and Liz (David) Mauro. She was predeceased by her sister Shirley (Orean West), her mother Jeanette (Nettie) (nee Fraser) and father John MacKinnon, and by her beloved husband Jack on July 29, 1994.
Connie will be remembered in a family Memorial Service at Knox United Church.  Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, Suite 201, 222 – 58th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3, Telephone: (403)290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com.
