July 4, 1931- Mi’ilya, Palestine
June 15, 2013 – Calgary, AB
Rumzia was born in 1931 in the town of Mi’ilya in Palestine, not far from Nazareth, the youngest of five children. She married in 1953 and immigrated to Canada as a young mother to join her husband Emile in 1962, arriving in northern Alberta in the middle of winter. They moved to Saskatchewan, where Emile taught school for 27 years, most of it in Meadow Lake, and Rumzia raised a family and learned to enjoy ice fishing. Rumzia was a devoted mother who worked tirelessly to take care of her family and believed everyone had a responsibility to make the world a better place as well.
Rumzia was a wonderful cook who tried to make sure that no one ever went hungry – whether they were at her doorstep or half-way around the world. In addition to her own four children, she has sponsored for years children in poor villages in Africa and the Middle East. Her Catholic faith was extremely important to her. She was active in the Catholic Women’s League and in volunteer work. She also was a beautiful seamstress and gardener – everything flourished under her care. In 2004 she and Emile moved to Calgary to be closer to their son John, his wife Kelly and their children.
Rumzia is survived by her husband Emile, her daughter Rebecca, her husband Miles Turner, son Elia, his wife Dorothy, daughter Jane, and son John, his wife Kelly, as well as grandchildren; Hailey, Cassandra, Liam and Madeleine. In her later years, Rumzia was happiest playing with her young grandchildren and cooking them their favorite foods – they were her greatest joy. ‘She was an exceptional grandmother,” says Kelly. “She was the type of grandmother I will try (and likely fail) to model myself after.” She also treasured her many nieces and nephews and their children in the country of her birth and around the world.
She will be missed by all.
