June 4, 2014 – Calgary, AB
In the peaceful early morning of June 4, 2014, Wilda passed away with her daughter, Gayle, by her side at Walden Heights Seniors Community where she lived for the past 22 months. Wilda was born in Calgary on December 12, 1925 with an adventurous and loving spirit.
Wilda cherished her family, friends, travelling, cooking, shopping and playing bridge. She was known for her smile and sense of humour, and was happy much of the time. Wilda was proud to be a medical lab technician for over twenty years, and especially liked working in her own lab at the old Herald Building. She loved her patients and enjoyed lunch hours where she could meet up with friends, shop, and explore downtown Calgary.
She supported her husband, Bob, in his retirement dream of building a 44 foot sailboat “SeaDreamer” in the backyard of their home. She never imagined she would spend years studying about food preparation for ocean sailing and stocking medical supplies for a sailing adventure that took them all the way to New Zealand and back. Wilda amazed her sailing friends by cooking full roast and turkey feasts in her small boat oven. No matter where she was, food and fellowship was important – whether it was Sunday dinners at home, or Happy Hours on the boat.
Wilda collected her friends like some people collect fine wines. She treasured them. Her friends came from all walks of life, cultures and faiths, and represented all ages. Wilda valued each person with an appreciation for the bond they shared, and the laughter and adventures they got into. She made buckets of strawberry jam in a travel trailer with Shirley; learned to sew beads onto her daughters’ synchronized swimming suits and headpieces from Jacquie; and went on shopping excursions with Hilda, Jean, Jane, Lynn and many others.
Left to extend her legacy of love are her daughters, Janet Arnold and Gayle Hayes, and granddaughters, Shavone and Keara Hayes. The family wishes to thank caregiver/companions Sondra Baker and Bontu Seyoum for providing such loving care to Wilda over the past two and half years. The staff from the Walden Heights dementia unit are also appreciated for the understanding and support they gave to Wilda and her family throughout the dementia journey.
A service of thanks will be held the first day of summer, Saturday June 21, at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) at 10:00 a.m. We are thanking Wilda for her contribution to each of our lives. The family would also like to thank friends and family for their presence and support to their mother’s life and their own. In honour of Wilda’s happy personality, you are invited to wear cheery colours. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
