ARKLEY, Kenneth Wilson

November 20, 1920 – Calgary, AB
July 22, 2014 – Calgary, AB

Ken Arkley, beloved husband of Yvonne Arkley of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the age of 93 years.

Ken was born at the Scottish Nursing Home in Calgary on November 20, 1920 to Robert & Laura Arkley. Ken was an all around athlete playing all kinds of sports growing up, in particular Hockey and Fastball. As boys, Ken and his brother Bob would walk across old downtown Calgary to the Crystal hockey rink and play all day with their friends and rivals.

After finishing school at Western Canada High School Ken got his first (and only) job at Westeel when he was 19 and worked for the company for forty-two years until his retirement in 1982. Ken had a short interruption in his time with Westeel as he enlisted in the RCAF during WWII and spent four years in the air force. During his time in the air force Ken was stationed in Edmonton for a time where he met and married his first wife Eunice. Ken and Eunice had four daughters together before Eunice got sick and sadly passed away while the girls were between the ages of 8 and 13 in 1959. Ken was left with an incredible challenge of trying to raise four young girls while still taking care of his work responsibilities on the road for Westeel.

In 1965 Ken married Yvonne and together they raised the girls as well as Yvonne’s two sons and in 1967 they had their only child together, Ken Jr.

When Ken retired in 1982 he joined the Elks Golf Club as a full golf member and played there three times a week for the next twenty-eight years before retiring from the game a month before his 90th birthday.

Ken and Yvonne had an incredible thirty-two year retirement together enjoying their family, travelling and going out for breakfast or lunch at least six days a week to a variety of local restaurants. Most popular was The Highlander, The Elks Club, Vlassis Pizza, Swiss Chalet (the chicken place) and Denny’s, which became an incredibly special place for them over the last several years.

Ken is survived by his wife of almost fifty years Yvonne Arkley; four daughters, Judith Patterson (Herb), Patti Hubley, Susan Wink and Mary Fisher (Brad); two step-sons, Danny Bilozir (Dana) and Randy Bilozir (Alyson); and his son Ken Jr (Leah). Ken is also survived by fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and ten great-great-grandchildren.

Ken was predeceased by his father and mother, Robert and Laura Arkley; his brother Bob; his sister Dolly; and his first wife Eunice.

Memorial Services will be held at Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association (5600 Centre Street North) on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Ken Arkley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

It was a privilege for me to have had Ken as a friend albeit a long time ago and for a short period. He was one of the real good guys and I can only wish that we would have shared much more time together. He will be missed greatly by family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

My family was saddened to read of the passing of Ken. I am Harold Hammell’s daughter and we all recall the compassion and kindness shown to our family from your family. I remember many times at dinner at your house after the passing of our mother with a father and a bunch of kids. My father spoke highly of his co worker and friend. In 2008 when Dad passed away we were comforted to see that Ken Arkley had attended his service. Our thoughts are with you all at this time. It looks like they both had many memories of Westeel for most of their lives. I cannot take a drive in the country and not run into a Westeel Grain bin and chuckle.
