ANSELMO – Anthony Garry (Tony) OC

March 14, 1918 – November 10, 2009

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a magnificent man Tony Anselmo beloved husband of Minerva Anselmo.

Tony was born in Michel B.C. and grew up in Vancouver. He met Minerva at an RCAF dinner in Regina and they married March 13, 1943 in Pincher Creek.

He was trained as a wireless operator and gunner for the Air Force at SAIT, and flew 41 RCAF bomber missions overseas. He returned to Vancouver after the war and reestablished his career with Canada Safeway. He worked his way up through the ranks and retired as President and CEO of Canada Safeway and a director of Safeway U.S. Inc.

Tony devoted his time to his passionate support for Canadian Football and Amateur sports through his many offices with the Calgary Stampeder Football Club and the improvements he instituted in McMahon Stadium.

Tony was a community builder of the highest caliber and his efforts as a leader had a significant positive impact on those around him and wider society. His impressive accomplishments and talents were widely acknowledged and he was formally recognized many times for his contributions to the community. Most recently in September of this year Tony traveled to Winnipeg to be inducted in the CFL Hall of Fame.

His service to the community was only outshone by his commitment and dedication to his family and friends. Tony was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he leaves behind his family and many friends who loved him, enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor, and will dearly miss this man of immeasurable accomplishments and uncompromising integrity.

Besides his loving wife Minerva, Tony is survived by his children and their spouses, Garry and Irma Anselmo of Vancouver, Dale LeBis of Calgary and Toni and Paul Trudel of Calgary; five grandchildren and their spouses, Janelle, David (Lisa), Adrien (Ana), Jeffrey and Lee.

Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (4718 Worcester Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Condolence Messages

  1. Martin Cartwright (son of Bill and Mary) :

    On behalf of the entire Cartwright family, Martin, Michael and Elli, we wish to express our sincere condolences on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather, “Uncle” Tony. While we knew little of “Uncle” Tony (a very busy man), we were extremely proud of our affiliation to him, his wife Minerva, and children Gerry and Toni. I will always remember our visits to the house, with Mom and Dad, and the hospitality that you all showed. Our hearts ache for “Auntie” Minerva and her loss and we pray that the hurt will soften quickly for the entire family.
    GOD bless you all and may HE watch over you and your family in this time of need.

  9. Achievement

    To have lived well
    Laughed often and loved much;
    To have gained the respect
    Of intelligent men
    And the love of children;
    To have filled a niche
    And accomplished a task;
    To have left the world better –
    Whether by an improved poppy,
    A perfect poem or a rescued soul;
    To have appreciated earth’s beauty
    And not failed to express it;
    To have looked for the best in others,
    And to have given the best of yourself,
    That is an achievement. Robert Louis Stevenson

    He will be greatly missed

  11. Clifford L. (Cliff) Gant :

    My name is Cliff Gant and I was the Corporate Controller of Safeway Stores at Oakland, CA from 1967 through 1982 when I retired with the additional duty as Treasurer. I offer sincere condolences.

    It was my priviledge and pleasure to have known and worked with great regard with Tony Anselmo. Although I was an American in the Oakland office (most executives would rather not be contacted or bothered by “Oakland”), the Canadians were lucky as they ran their own operations. While the I had responsibility for the financial affairs of Canada Safeway, I was savvy enough to limit my involvement.

    Tony, however, enjoyed his contacts with Oakland and I personally enjoyed the few ocassions when we did meet mostly at functions in Canada.

    I remember walking up the walk to the Anselmo’s home in Calgary one fine day in June and asked Tony why the Christmas lights were still in place. He surprised me in saying the the ground was still frozen.

    We had some good executives in Safeway and we had some very good executives in Safeway but Tony was none of those-he was a very, very great executive as his career proves.

    Cliff Gant
