ANGELO, Mogens Bagge

May 22, 1919 – April 10, 2012

Mogens Angelo, beloved husband of Grete Angelo, passed peacefully away on April 10th, 2012.

Born in Copenhagen, Denmark on May 22, 1919, he received a marketing degree at the University of Copenhagen. One day he found Margarethe Ohliger, he knew she was the one, they were married on September 21, 1942. After immigrating to Canada in 1956, he found work in the men’s department at Simpson’s in Toronto. When he had prepared everything, in 1957, he sent for his family, his wife, and three children, Torben, Stephen, and Bente to join him in Canada. After a few years at Simpson’s he decided to set out on his own and opened a very successful Art Gallery in downtown Toronto where he met many lifetime friends. In 1977 he set forth on his greatest adventure with his wife and two sons moving to Calgary and co-founded Nordesign Furniture International, still one of the oldest family run furniture stores in Southern Alberta. With his business, marketing and accounting skills, it still thrives. He retired his role at Nordesign in 2008 at the age of 88.

It is not possible to find anyone who had anything bad to say about Mogens, he affected everyone in a positive way. Not blessed with an imposing physical stature, he was double-blessed with his unique charm, wit, talent and the ability to make all that met him recall his love of art, music, language and world history. As a youth he played piano and he took up this love of music again when arriving in Calgary. All those who had the pleasure of hearing him play, realized that he had a talent that far exceeded a hobby, he was very accomplished by any standard. We are pleased and fortunate that he left us his musical legacy in his piano recordings of classical, blues and swing, which he mastered himself.

Mogens will always be cherished and missed by his loving wife and children, daughters-in-law, Linda and Nancy; and son-in-law Michael; his two grandchildren, Heather and her husband Damian, Ryan and his partner Lexie. He was predeceased by his brothers, Preben and Bent; and his sister Lisa.

A Celebration of Mogens’ life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY¹S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on April 16, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Mogens Angelo a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: (403)243-8200

  2. The challenge is not for those who leave this world, but rather, for those of us left behind. Mogens, you gave to me such a rich, inspirational, perspective on life and on the world. Your witty sense of humour, playful smile, fantasticly entertaining stories (past and present) will alway remain a treasured part of my life. Mogens I will miss your presence in my life deeply. You were like the grandfather I never had and the time we spent together was precious. I still listen to the CD you gave me of you playing the piano so beautifully. Today I cry when I listen but some day soon, when the tears are gone, I will listen with gratefullness in having had the blessed opportunity to be a part of your rich life. Thank you for sharing a little piece of your life….with me. I will support the ones you loved the most as best I can to adjust to their loss and forever you will have a special, sacred place in my heart….reserved for only you. All my love, Ruth

  8. Mogens was one of those true characters that there seems to fewer and fewer of these days…no one will replace him for sure…I used to enjoy being “trapped ” in his office and sharing views on politics, taxes, and just about anything else you can imagine…well spoken and always a gentleman….have missed seeing him at the store since he retired..but he still brings a smile to my face whenever Steve and I talk about his Dad… ! 9. Robert Franeck :

We all love company, even if it’s a small burning candle. Mogens was like that and loved the company of anyone, anytime. He would enjoy you equally, whether you owned the company or the man that emptied the waste baskets. I met him twenty years ago and every time I saw him since, it was the same enthused greeting as that day. What a guy he was, that Mr. Angelo.

  11. To the Angelo Famiy:
Our heartfelt condolences. You dont know me, but me and my family were lucky enough to get to know Angelo…My mum Mehroo Wadia was in the same Sarcee Rehab center about a year ago recovering from a massive stroke. Angelo befriended my mum and made her stay there much happier…he brought back my mum’s smile! we used to sit and talk to him during lunch and dinner times at the rehab center and got to know him. He was a very sweet soul, and we are happy that we had the opportunity to meet him…he had a great sense of humour – but had a sensitive side to him too. A perfect gentleman. God rest his soul in peace. May God give you his family peace too. Yasmin

  13. Larry Clark :

I fondly remember the discussions we used to have in the old store on 32 ave., Mogens telling me about The Hot Club of France, and other music from back in the day. I made him a tape of Manhattan Transfer, and he made me one of Jelly Roll Morton. I will remember him as a scholar and a gentleman, and a hell of a nice guy. Not a bad legacy.
