ANDREAS, Jean Freda (nee Sawatzky)

ANDREAS, Jean Freda (nee Sawatzky)
August 21, 1932 – Herbert, Saskatchewan
July 12, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Andreas, Jean F. Born 1932 Herbert, SK, died July 12th, 2017 Calgary AB.

We are sad to announce the passing of Jean Andreas (nee Sawatzky). She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on Wednesday night.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 30 years, Ewald, and her eldest son Charles. Jean leaves behind her daughter Sonja of Calgary, her son Curtis (Brenda) of Blind Bay, her grandchildren Natasha, Lindsey, Matthew, and Max. The second youngest of five children, Jean was predeceased by her brothers Jake and Herb and her sisters Erna and Alma.

Many who remember Jean from her early years, specifically the 40’s and 50’s, would recall her amazing coloratura soprano voice. She was often deemed by those in the music community as being a child prodigy. Jean was singing at weddings by the early age of seven and by the time she was sixteen, had won several vocal competitions throughout Saskatchewan.

As a young girl Jean loved to participate in sports, particularly track & field, baseball, and ice skating. A place Jean held very close to her heart was the family’s summer cabin on Shuswap Lake. Jean always relished getting to the cabin to enjoy the lake. So much so that Jean was waterskiing to the age of 65!

Besides being an incomparable cook, baker, and homemaker, Jean was partner to her husband Ewald, in business for over 25 years.

From an early age, Jean shared a special passion for current events, politics, and sociology with her eldest brother and teacher, Jake Sawatzky. She enjoyed hearty conversations about the latest world events.
Jean travelled extensively, while always learning about local cultures and religions. The Philippines, China, The Bahamas, and Hawaii were just a few of her favourite destinations.

Jean was a veracious reader and writer with wide variety of interests. Mom blessed us with hundreds of pages of memoirs and history penned in her own hand. She was also an avid gardener, spending countless hours tending to her plants and flowers.

Honouring Jean’s wishes, in lieu of a service, the family will plan a celebration of her life for a future date.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Jean Andreas, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
