Andersen, Karlo

Karlo Andersen, 78, died peacefully with his family at his side in Calgary, on Sunday afternoon, December 7, 2008.  Born June 13, 1930 on a small farm at Konradsminde near Ravnkilde, Denmark, Karlo came to Canada in 1957 with one suitcase, twenty dollars and just a few words of English, planning to make his fortune and return home. A road trip from Kingston to Vancouver stopped short in Calgary where he met his wife, Nan Maxwell of Dunfermline, Scotland, at a community dance. After studying at SAIT he worked for several years as a journeyman carpenter. He built a house in Lakeview for his young family and opened Andersen Hardware in MaylandHeights. He returned to building and eventually realized his dream of establishing his own housebuilding company, Andmax Construction, through which he built many beautiful homes for appreciative families in Calgary and the surrounding area. He retired with Nan in HighRiver, where he enjoyed many years as a member of the Highwood Golf and Country Club as well as many seasons of his own private road race: he could often be found, even into his early seventies, running his 10k along the Coal Trail towards Longview. Karlo is survived by his wife Nan, daughter Katheryn and son Martin of Calgary, and by his sisters Lissi and Greta and brother Peter and family in Denmark. From him we learned to imagine, to dream, to tell stories. We learned to be good natured and gentle with others, no matter how great or small. He taught us all love and humour and will be missed so much. A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, December 12, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through   If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta, #102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 243-9901, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 – 325 Manning Rd.
