August 23, 1924 – March 7, 2015
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear mother and Savta, Ethel Allman, at the age of 90 years. Ethel was raised in Alliance, Alberta on a farm. Ethel’s generous and caring nature charmed all who had the pleasure to be in her company. She had a keen sense of humour and responded with joy at the wit of young and old. Always young at heart, she was a creative sewing whiz who shared her talents with her children, grandchildren, and anyone who needed help. She volunteered with Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, ORT, UJA, JCC, Jewish Seniors’ Group, Chevra Kadisha of Calgary, and as a docent at the Glenbow Museum. She also donated her time in many capacities at the Edmonton Talmud Torah and canvassing door-to-door for a variety of medical charities.
Ethel was a teacher’s aide at Calgary Akiva Academy and Bishop Carroll High School where she was cherished by students and teachers alike. Her cooking and baking were renowned by family and friends, especially for weekly Shabbat dinners. Ethel loved all people of all ages and had many special friends throughout her life. As the matriarch and role-model for the entire Allman-Miller family, she will be greatly missed.
Ethel was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ralph, her parents Israel and Esther Miller, stepmother Jenny Miller, sister Evelyn, and brother Stan. She is survived by her sisters Ruth Nolan, Mona Witten, and Clarice (Ted) Bell and her sister-in-law Esther Miller, all of Edmonton. She was a devoted mother to Danny, Esther (Gary Silberg), Phillip (Holly Warren), and Lawrence (Gitti). She was a loving Savta to Safi, Danit, Rachelle, Josh, Eran, Rafi, Effie, Shmuly, Zvi, Mendy, and Hadassah. She was blessed with five great-grandchildren – Ayelet, Noa, Maya, Adi, and Sha’anan.
The Allman family would especially like to thank her family doctor Dr. Jaclyn Safran, all staff at Trinity Lodge, Barb Siebel of the Heart Failure Home Care Team, the Palliative Care Team, her caretaker Victoria David, and all staff at Chinook Hospice.
Funeral Services were held at the Chevra Kadisha on Sunday, March 8, and interment followed at the Erlton Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca.
