ALLEN, Kenneth “Ken” Eric

July 15, 1964 – Winnipeg, MB
March 30, 2014 – Calgary, AB

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Eric Allen beloved husband of Allison of Calgary, at the age of 49 years.

Ken was a professional pilot for Air Canada and a devoted father and husband. He was very active in downhill skiing, water skiing, running, biking, hiking, power lifting and of course motocross racing. Ken was also very talented with woodworking, mechanics and home renovations. Ken could do anything he set his mind to and had a determined personality. Ken lived his life to the fullest until his tragic motocross accident in June, 2012. He endeavored through rehabilitation to recover from severe traumatic brain injury; however, he could not win that losing battle.

Besides his loving wife Allison, Kenny is survived by children Jeff and Sabrina; sisters and brother Donna Mulholland (Doug), Bill Allen (Barbara), Betty Penner (Larry) and Wendy Kon (Chris); and many nieces and nephews; and all fellow brothers of Air Canada Pilots. Ken was predeceased by his mother and father Ida and Eric Allen.

Ken will be sorely missed by his cherished family and many close knit friends.

A Celebration of Ken’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Ken Allen, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: (403) 256-9575.

Condolence Messages

  1. Brian Ferrier :

Very sad to hear of Ken’s passing. He will be missed by all.

I’ll always remember Ken as the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back to help you. One of my fondest memories was the night Ken and I spent in a snow cave (quinzee) we built ourselves, in 1989 (?),on a winter survival course at Mount Royal College. Our quinzee wasn’t the greatest (we froze), but it still was a great time.

    R.I.P.

Dear Allison, Jeff and Sabrina, I will miss Ken so much. He was always willing to take me skiing with him even though I could only go on green runs. He was always a good sport and a great brother-in-law. I will always admire his handy work around your home and an inspiration for me to keep fit.
Sorry Kathleen and I won’t be at the funeral, but our hearts are with you.
    Love you, take care

With his return to Calgary, I was able to once again connect with Ken with visits to the hospital.
He was doing very well and did not see this coming at all, it was quite the shock.

Allison , Jeff and Sabrina … my sincere condolences to hear of Ken’s passing. I first met Ken when he was a new pilot with Air Canada and he flew with me as a first officer on the DC9 .
I found Ken a true gentleman to fly with . Great sense of humour , well liked by his colleagues , and a skilled pilot as well. We shared many common interests which made working with Ken a pleasure.
I will miss him . Rest easy Ken , you left this world a better place.

  8. The Aalbers' Family :

    Allison, Jeff, and Sabrina,

I met Ken in my first week at Mount Royal College. It didn’t take long to realize what a kind and generous person I had met. Ken would summarize days and days of text material, (in the perfect Kenny format) photo copy, and hand them out, for all to study from.
Kenny would keep friends close, and arranged many house boat trips. True to Ken’s attention to detail, he looked after the rental, food, and refreshments. He made each trip a 5 star experience.
Ken is truly one of the best friends that anyone could have. I will miss him, but never forget him.
    Rest in peace Buddy…

  9. For Allison ,Jeff & Sabrina, my deepest sympathy.

Ken was one of a kind.
I met Ken in 1991 when I met the Island lake crew.
He was flying ATR a aero Commander, with Captain Anthony “Mr.” Hall.
Flying Medevacs out of Garden Hill, MB. He was loyal, VERY hard working
and a perfectionist. And he could FLY! On occasion he had a few of his buddies
holding their breaths, flying the little commander, not to mention the double flame out
    in the turbo commander.
Ken was the kindest, generous person. He will be missed.

    Til we meet again

  10. Brad Kenyon :

    Allison, Jeff, and Sabrina,
I will greatly miss Ken and cherish his memory. He was a fine man, good friend and great pilot. This was never more evident than the time, shortly after his promotion to Captain on the A320, we hit the seagulls on take-off. Ken’s reactions and conduct were exemplary. I often think of that incident and hope that I will be able to emulate his fine example if called upon.
    Deepest sympathy,
    Brad Kenyon

  12. Travis Crowe :

I first met Ken while flying in Northern Manitoba, though I got to really know and appreciate him while flying as his F/O on the A320 at Air Canada. He was the kind of guy that impressed you in many ways and on many levels. He was a professional on the flight deck, and always worked hard to build a team out of what might be a one time crew meeting. On a personal level, I will always remember and value the long talks we had crossing the continent, or on various layovers scattered from the Caribbean to slightly less hospitable locales. He loved his family dearly, demonstrated character in all areas, and gave selflessly to his friends and colleagues. I will miss his leadership and friendship greatly, and pray for comfort and respite for his family, friends and colleagues.

    Dear Allison, Jeff and Sabrina,

Our hearts and all our love go out to all of you. We love Uncle Ken very much. He was a very proud father and husband. He was a man who could do anything he put his mind to and he proved it over and over again in his career paths and his work at home. Be proud of him and that you got to spend this time with such a wonderful person. Ken is resting now and in peace.
    We will miss him.
We love each one of you so much.
