AIUTO, Maria Santa

AIUTO, Maria Santa
April 2, 1920 – Giuliana, Palermo
July 14, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of a truly great Sicilian matriarch: Maria Santa Aiuto. Maria Santa of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Carewest Garrison Green Nursing Home on Friday, July 14, 2017, at the age of 97 years.

Born in Giuliana, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy, the youngest in a family of six siblings; Vincenzo, Marianna, Gaetana, Francesca, and Francesco. Maria always spoke lovingly of her family and could never finish a story without shedding a tear about one of her brothers or sisters. From the age of 8 or 9 Maria worked side-by-side with her family members in the hills of Giuliana, picking pistachios, olives, grapes, and almonds, as well as learning the fine arts of sewing, embroidery, crocheting and gardening. Maria always said that she could keep up with any man when it came to cutting wheat by hand. In June 1958 Maria immigrated to Calgary, Canada with her beloved husband Giuliano and her children Nina and Tony so that her family could have a better life. This was a huge sacrifice for Maria as she had to leave her loved ones behind. Because of her tenacious and resilient spirit, Maria thrived in Canada, bringing her strong Italian roots and traditions with her. She reveled in cooking delicious ‘tarelli’, ‘canolli’, ‘gammelli’, ‘sfingi’, and ‘pasta fritta’ for her family, along with gardening in her greenhouse and cultivating her tomatoes. Her beautiful crocheting masterpieces and blankets adorn the homes of her friends and loved ones.

Maria will be lovingly remembered by her family as an honest, hardworking, and dedicated woman who always put her ‘famiglia’ first, instilling in them the strong family values and roots that she carried with her from her beloved Sicilia.
Maria is survived by her son, Tony Aiuto; daughter-in-law, Adriana; daughter, Nina Diano; son-in-law, Frank; loving grandchildren, Domenic (Janet) Diano, Giulio (Shawna) Diano, Maria (Michael) Vandezande, Julian Aiuto, Alyssa (Michael) Ciaramella, Jenna Aiuto; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Devin Diano, Alexis and Brendan Diano, and Giuliana Vandezande.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Maria’s life at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85th Street S.W.) on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Cristino Bouvette presiding. Reception to follow in the church foyer. Graveside Service to follow reception at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be forwarded through

In living memory of Maria Santa Aiuto a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
